TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Filming was hard on the actors: James Garner dislocated his shoulder, and Donald Sutherland cracked a knee.

As it approaches the Kennedy Space Center, the Daedalus Orbiter makes a double sonic boom. This is because the Orbiter creates two shock waves, the bow wave and the tail wave, which are heard as separate "booms".

The Mission Control set was built using blueprints of the real Mission Control, provided by N.A.S.A.

Clint Eastwood was initially just going to star in and produce this movie, not direct it. After potential directors thought filming space travel would be too difficult, he decided to do it himself.

According to Adam Savage, in order to replicate the appearance of gold foil on camera, the special effects team tested various materials and found that the gold-colored wrappers of Rolo candies worked best.

Popular Dialogues

"Frank Corvin: Well, what do you say, Reverend? You think a prayer's in order? Tank Sullivan: I was just reciting the Shepard's Prayer. Alan Shepard's prayer. Oh Lord, please don't let us screw up. Amen."

"Frank Corvin: You know what the worst day of my life was? The day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. I was probably the only person in America who wanted to commit suicide that day. Col. William 'Hawk' Hawkins: Well, thanks a lot Frank. We haven't spoken in twelve years and that's basically been the big question on my mind, what could make you commit suicide."
