When building the character of Kurt Kunkle, Eugene Kotlyarenko and star Joe Keery watched cringe compilations and videos from people without a big following.
During the scene at the taco truck, a comment on Kurt's stream says "Waddup I'm Jared I'm 19 and I never f***ing learned how to read" in reference to a famous Vine by Josh Ovalle, who plays Bobby in the film.
Writer and director Eugene Kotlyarenko said he did "40 all nighters" writing all the comments and user names that appear throughout the movie.
Only Two scenes in Spree where filmed with a film camera
Despite this movie coming out in 2020, as of July 2022, Joe Keery still is posting on TikTok as Kurt under the account @kurtsworld
"[Kurt is driving Jessie] Jessie Adams: Where are we going? Kurt Kunkle: I'm taking you home. Jessie Adams: This is not the way to my fucking house, Kurt! Kurt Kunkle: Oh, no, not your home. My home... My home."
"[first lines] Kurt Kunkle: Hey, guys. What's up? It's Kurt here from Kurt's World. Hey, guys. How's it going? It's Kurt from Kurt's World. Hey, guys. How's it going? Kurt from Kurt's World here. Hey, what's up, guys? Uh, Kurt here from Kurt's World. Hi, everybody. This is Kurt from Kurt's World and today, I'm going to draw my life. Something in these videos that I really appreciate is everybody's complete honesty in telling their life story. And where does this story take place? Los Angeles. That's where I was born, although shortly after, my parents had to move out to Azusa cause it's just a little bit more affordable and better for raising a family."
