Aram Nicholas is a fictionalized version of film director Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich was dating Dorothy Stratten around the time that they collaborated on They All Laughed (1981). In this film, the title of that collaboration was changed to "Tinsel Time". This was due to Bogdanovich threatening to sue if he was unhappy with how he was portrayed.
Bob Fosse made Paul Snider the main character in the film because he identified with his character the most. Fosse even told actor Eric Roberts that when he played Snider, he was really playing himself if Fosse had not been successful in show business.
Hugh Hefner said that Eric Roberts' portrayal of Paul Snider was right on the money. However, William Sachs who had directed Dorothy Stratten in the sci-fi comedy Galaxina (1980) claims that it was an inaccurate portrayal, and that Snider would rarely ever talk to anyone who wasn't Dorothy and would just look at others with a creepy 'death stare'.
Playboy magnate Hugh Hefner sued the producers after the film was released because he did not like how he was portrayed.
The photographer who takes the initial photos of Dorothy for submission to Playboy is played by Keith Hefner, Hugh Hefner's younger brother.
"Snider: You won't forget Paul Snider."
"Snider: I have this feeling about Dorothy. This hunch. She's gonna be a big star - in the movies or on TV - I don't know. But, a really big star! But, she's gonna need help. You can't do it alone. You need somebody! Dorothy's Mother: And you're gonna be that somebody? Snider: I know all the tricks. I know all the con games. I know all the bullshit and there's plenty of that, believe me. Together - we could be somebody. People would know who we are. People would know our names. People would treat us that special way - the way they treat stars!"
