The film contains some visual homages to Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927). Brigitte Helm ("Maria") was an inspiration for The Bride and had been considered by James Whale for the part in Bride of Frankenstein (1935), but she turned it down.
Director Maggie Gyllenhaal cast real-life husband Peter Sarsgaard in a major role.

Christian Bale portrays Dr. Frankenstein's Monster. His youngest child, Joseph (also known as Rex), will have a small part. Joseph/Rex previously had a small part in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), which his father also starred in.
Maggie Gyllenhaal had previously directed Jessie Buckley in The Lost Daughter (2021), which was Gyllenhaal's feature film directorial debut. Buckley's performance in the film earned the actress her first ever Academy Award nomination.
