What Emily (Claire Foy) and then later Sir William Ingram (Toby Jones) say to Wain about Wain almost single-handedly changing the public perception of cats was true. Louis Wain's pictures may have been humorous in intent but they did play a significant part in changing the way people looked at cats. Prior to this they were seen as functional creatures that were semi wild and useful for the killing of rodents. However Wain's pictures were popular amongst children and women and it led to the public viewing cats as domestic pets to the point that they would eventually challenge dogs for the public's affections.
The sound of a Theremin can be heard prominently in the soundtrack. Although rarely used these days due to its association with old horror and science fiction films of the 1950s, in the 1920s the Theremin was considered a revolutionary and new musical instrument and representative of the dawn of the age of electricity. This is in keeping with the Louis Wain's view of electricity being the future of life.
Although the character of Emily Richardson is meant to be ten years older than Louis, Claire Foy is actually eight years younger than Benedict Cumberbatch.
Unusually, for a modern film, this movie was shot in the 4:3 screen ratio. This was done to reflect the early days of motion picture photography and was the cinema standard right up until the 1950s when wide-screen formats started to dominate.
All the main cast from director Will Sharpe's first project, Flowers (2016), appear in some capacity in this movie, including Sophia Di Martino, Olivia Colman, Julian Barratt and Daniel Rigby.
"Louis Wain: You make the world beautiful and warm and kind. I just wanted to say thank you for that before it's too late. Emily Richardson-Wain: I don't make the world beautiful, Louis. The world is beautiful, and you've helped me to see that, too. Just remember - however hard things get, however much you feel like you're struggling, the world is full of beauty. And it's up to you to capture it, Louis. To look and to share it with as many people as you can. You are a prism through which that beam of life refracts."
"Emily Richardson-Wain: I think you are the first person to see that cats are in fact ridiculous. They're silly and cuddly. And lonely and frightened and brave. Like us. One day, I don't think it will be so peculiar to have a cat in the house as a little pet."
