The dinner conversation about the limits of Holmes' knowledge (literature, astronomy, politics, etc) is taken from a list made by Dr. Watson in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Holmes story, 'A Study in Scarlet'.
Ian Hart reprised his role as Dr. John Watson in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking (2004). He also played Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Finding Neverland (2004).
Neve McIntosh revealed in a 2002 interview that playing Beryl Stapleton brought back painful memories of being physically and mentally abused as an 18 year old by her first boyfriend.
Holmes' use of cocaine while on a case is non-canonical - in Doyle's stories, Holmes used cocaine only he was bored due to inactivity.
Dr. Watson's revolver is a Webley Mk I, a valiant attempt by the filmmakers to give Watson a period-correct revolver. However, though the Mk I was in production at the time the story is set, 1889, it could not have been Watson's service revolver, since Watson had invalided out by 1881 and the Webley didn't enter production till six years later.
"Dr. John Watson: [throws his coat to pull Holmes out of a quicksand on the moor] Now to put my tailor to the test. [pulls Holmes out] Sherlock Holmes: Three cheers for Savile Row!"
"Sir Henry Baskerville: What do you call that thing where the landowner has the right to bed the local women? Dr. John Watson: Droit de signeur. Sadly for you, the feudal system was abolished in Devonshire some time ago."
