IMDbThe Hunger Games is the first in the epic action adventure franchise, which is famous for its special effects and science fiction plot. And, the first film really hits it out of the park with a superb plot and interesting characters. It is long, no doubt about that, but it is raw. This film had a smaller budget compared to the succeeding movies, and the filmmaking really is solid despite that fact. The Hunger Games is a compelling dystopian story of Panem, where boys and girls must compete in a brutal fight to death. It is convincing in its telling of this fictional world, with actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Woody Harrelson helping the cause. The plot might be too unrealistic or over-the-top, as some feel, but the storytelling and build-up that ends in an amazing climax is well and truly worth it.

There was a swear jar on the set. Co-writer and director Gary Ross said that half of it was contributed by Jennifer Lawrence.
While horsing around on the set, Jennifer Lawrence accidentally kicked Josh Hutcherson in the head, knocking him out and resulting in a concussion.
Jennifer Lawrence was paid what was, for her, the high fee of $500,000. It took her three days before she accepted the role because she was unsure how the role would clearly affect her career, since her background was largely on the indie film circuit. For The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), she was paid $10 million, twenty times the initial offer.
Woody Harrelson is a vegan in real life. In scenes where Haymitch is seen eating, he eats either dessert or vegetables, or just drinks.
Donald Sutherland saw the script by accident and, when he read it, lobbied for the role of President Snow because the script reminded him of Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory (1957). He succeeded in getting the role after he wrote a letter of plea to Gary Ross explaining why he should be cast.
"Caesar Flickerman: So, Peeta, tell me, is there a special girl back home? Peeta Mellark: No. No, not really. Caesar Flickerman: No? I don't believe it for a second. Look at that face. Handsome man like you. Peeta... tell me. Peeta Mellark: Well, there, uh... there is this one girl that I've had a crush on forever. Caesar Flickerman: Ah. Peeta Mellark: But I don't think she actually recognized me until the Reaping. Caesar Flickerman: Well, I'll tell you what, Peeta. You go out there, and you win this thing, and when you get home, she'll have to go out with you. Right, folks? Peeta Mellark: Thanks, but I, uh, I don't think winning's gonna help me at all. Caesar Flickerman: And why not? Peeta Mellark: Because she came here with me."
"President Snow: Seneca... why do you think we have a winner? Seneca Crane: [frowns] What do you mean? President Snow: I mean, why do we have a winner? I mean, if we just wanted to intimidate the districts, why not round up twenty-four of them at random and execute them all at once? Be a lot faster. [Seneca just stares, confused] President Snow: Hope. Seneca Crane: Hope? President Snow: Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained. Seneca Crane: So...? President Snow: So, CONTAIN it."
