A drifter wandered on to the set at the desert town of Andamooka in northern South Australia with a stick of dynamite. The cast and crew of about 30 people spread rapidly all but for one special effects man who noticed that the stick had no detonator. The local wag threw the it under a truck where many people were hiding from the incident. The man was fined $200 (Aust) when it went to court.
Second of only three theatrical feature films as a producer for the late Byron Kennedy. The other movies Kennedy co-produced were Mad Max (1979) and The Road Warrior (1981).
Gerard Kennedy received top / first billing, Michael Preston received second billing.
This film was directed by Tim Burstall whose family were also involved in other key crew roles. Burstall's sons Dan Burstall and Tom Burstall acted as the film's cinematographer and first assistant director respectively.
The lead "knuckle-man" in this film, as with its source 'The Last of the Knucklemen' play, is nick-named "Tarzan" after the legendary jungle hero character as created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Actor Gerard Kennedy, who plays Tarzan in this film, said in an interview on the DVD that when the production arrived in the country town of Andamooka, South Australia, there was actually a knuckle man there who was nicknamed "Tarzan".
