In the movie, the Texas Ranger who arrests Jess Newton is Frank Hamer. The real Frank Hamer planned and participated in the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde.

Matthew McConaughey is from Uvalde, Texas, as was the real Willis Newton, the character he plays in the movie.

The oil rig tool pusher that Matthew McConaughey's character Willis Newton punches in the face is actually McConaughey's older brother, Rooster McConaughey.

While on location for this project, Dwight Yoakam wrote the songs he used for the album "The Long Way Home".
