The Stepfather (1987) was loosely based on John List, a New Jersey accountant who murdered his family in November 1971 and disappeared. He was found nearly eighteen years later living under an alias when his neighbor recognized him on America's Most Wanted: America Fights Back (1988) and reported it to the Police.
Terry O'Quinn, the star of The Stepfather (1987), was offered a cameo role in this movie, but he turned it down.
A scene in the trailer, in which a buzzsaw swings back and forth a few inches away from a character's face, was cut for pacing reasons, but it had already been used in multiple advertising materials before it was trimmed from the final release.
Braeden Lemasters, who played Penn Badgley's younger brother in this movie, played Badgley's younger self in Easy A (2010).
The original R-rated 1987 movie featured a young step-daughter and a nude scene where she took a shower. The PG-13 remake changed it to a young step-son, but no nudity.
"David Harris: I thought I could make this work. But I can't! This isn't the right family for me. The boy is a problem. He has no respect for me. You haven't been hard enough on him. You've got to make a boy understand! You've got to break him if necessary! You're too weak to do that. Susan Harding: What are you talking about? David Harris: I thought it could work, but it can't! I thought you could be Mrs. Grady Edwards, but you can't! Susan Harding: What did you say? Who is Grady Edwards? David Harris: Wait, wait... it just... wait a minute. I... uh... [there is a long tense pause as David/The Stepfather, too late, realizes his slip] David Harris: Who am I here?"
"David Harris: [about news story] That kind of thing really gets to me, that someone could do that to her own children. Michael Harding: It does make you wonder, though, what takes to make someone do something so sick. Susan Harding: Change the conversation, please. David Harris: [under his breath] Maybe they disappointed her."
