Like the previous film, The Trip (2010), Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan improvised their scenes together.
Rob and Steve play Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill as they drive to the various restaurants in the film. This led to the album re-entering the UK charts at No. 40, selling just under 2000 copies in the week.
In one scene Rob Brydon comments that Tom Hardy couldn't do what he does. In the film Locke (2013), Hardy plays a man with a strong Welsh accent filmed entirely through dash-cams while driving and the audience watches his life and marriage collapse. Brydon's breakthrough performance was in Marion & Geoff (2000), a TV show fitting the same description.
Steve's on-screen son, Joe, wears a The Big Bang Theory (2007) t-shirt that diagrams "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock".
"Steve: [In reference to Alanis Morissette] You know I can see the appeal in a woman like this. Volatile women are always sexy when you first meet them but two years down the line you're sorta saying things like, 'can you just put the lids back on eh... on these jars please.'"
"Emma: [upon looking at Mount Vesuvius from a ferry] Do you think it's still active? Rob: I like to think so."
