This is a semi-autobiographical film for co-director Neal Jimenez who became a paraplegic after a hiking accident.
Twenty years after this movie was released, Helen Hunt again played a married woman involved in an extramarital sexual relationship with a paralyzed man in The Sessions (2012).
Eric Stoltz spent three months in a wheelchair in preparation for his role in this movie, and stayed in the chair throughout filming as well.
As of 2015, it remains as the only film directed by Neal Jimenez.
Jason Patric was originally set to play Joel.
"[after Joel nearly crashes the van they're in] Joel Garcia: Boy, he sure came out of nowhere, didn't he? Sang: It's a good thing we're already paralyzed."
"Raymond Hill: If a man's got a problem with race, it means he's ignorant and fearful. Right? You're a writer, tell him! Joel Garcia: Could just be a zinc deficiency."
