In an episode set in Manhattan, Pumbaa tells Timon, "I wanna see a Broadway show. 'Guys and Dolls!'". Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella, the voices of Timon and Pumbaa, co-starred in the highly-successful 1992 Broadway revival of the musical "Guys and Dolls."
Timon occasionally refers to himself as "that rat-thing from The Lion King (1994)." This was Nathan Lane's own description of Timon.
Ernie Sabella, Robert Guillaume and Jim Cummings were the only voice actors from The Lion King (1994) that reprised their roles of their respective characters for the TV Spin Off. The rest of the cast apart from Rowan Atkinson would eventually reprise their roles in The Lion King's Sequel and Midquel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998) and The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata (2004) respectively.
In the German dub, the voice actors from the dub of 'The Lion King'- Ilja Richter, Rainer Basedow, Frank Lenart, Hella Von Sinnen, Frank Lorenz Engel, Eberhard Prüter and Joachim Kemmer- reprised their roles.
The show features a minor antagonist named Bahuka. Bahuka was another name of the Hindu deity Nala. In the Lion King franchise, the lioness Nala is a major protagonist.
"Pumbaa: He's gonna hurt us, Timon! You've got to do something! Timon: What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula? Pumbaa: I don't think that would work in this kind of situation, Timon."
"Banzai the Hyena: Hey, I wanna sit in the front! You got it last time! Shenzi the Hyena: Oh, all right. [they switch] Shenzi the Hyena: Hey, wait a minute! There was not last time!"
