Due to Helen Hunt's rising stardom and recent hit sitcom Mad About You, the producers didn't initially approach her to return to the low budget series, feeling she wouldn't do it. Helen Hunt, who remained close with the cast and crew, was shocked to learn this and said she was more than happy to return as Lena Deth, albeit in a more limited role due to her busy shooting schedule with Mad About You.
Executive producer Charles Band stated in an interview that he was originally going to direct this sequel (as he directed Trancers I and II) but his responsibilities as president of Full Moon Entertainment did not allow him the pleasure to.
Tim Thomerson stated in an interview that they tried to make this Trancer sequel a little more darker and violent but still keep that tone of tongue-in-cheek.
The idea of Shark, the android sidekick, was developed after the director noticed that Tim Thomerson was suffering from various aches and pains during filming and was afraid that Thomerson wouldn't be able to carry the film on his own.
The film's trailer consists primarily of alternate takes unused in the final cut. Shark even has a completely different voice in the trailer.
