A 27-word "caveman language" was devised for this movie, supposedly drawing on Phoenician, Latin, and Sanskrit sources. Some of the key words in this language are: "neecha" is "stop" or "come back"; "zak" is "gone" or "left"; "akita" is "look" or "see"; "neecro" is "bad" or "evil"; "m'kan" is "kill" or "killed"; "mata" is "dead"; "yo kita" is "go".
Victoria Vetri revealed in a 1984 interview that the original version of the film contains nudity. The nude scenes include Sanna and Tara having sex in a cave, and Tara stripping her on the beach. The uncensored version has since been released on home video.
Hammer's publicity department worked with Playboy magazine to produce a nude photo spread of Victoria Vetri showing more flesh than she was allowed to in the North American version of the film.
Originally the film was to include a tyrannosaurus, but the very conservative head of Hammer ordered Val Guest and Jim Danforth to remove the creature because he thought the creature's stance feigned the stereotypical stance of gay men.
Although the film was completed in 1968, Jim Danforth's special effects weren't ready. When the film premiered in 1970, the wait seemed worth it as it garnered Oscar recognition.
