TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The "watts-volts" routine was not in the script. It was created by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello on the set.

This was the first Bud Abbott and Lou Costello film that did not contain musical numbers. As a result, it was their shortest film to date.

Contains two references to Bud Abbott and Lou Costello's classic baseball routine, "Who's on First." Lou's exclamation, "Next you'll be telling me Watt's on second base," tops off his watts/volts exchange with Bud. When they later turn on a radio and hear "Who's on First" they promptly turn it off in disgust.

For a murder mystery set in a radio studio, the film certainly had its share of personalities who themselves were radio actors. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello had been introduced to the nation on "The Kate Smith Hour," and in 1942 when this film was made had their own highly successful radio show. William Bendix (Detective Brannigan) was a bit player in radio at the time, but beginning in 1944 would become famous for his radio show (and later film and television series) The Life of Riley (1953). Walter Tetley (the prankster usher) was an accomplished adult radio actor whose unique voice allowed him to play children's roles on a variety of shows, most notably "The Great Gildersleeve" and "The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show." Finally, William Gargan (Detective Moran) starred in his own radio show, "Barry Craig, Confidential Investigator."

When Lou Costello shows up at the studio to claim his "Wheel of Fortune" prize, the music the studio orchestra plays is "You're a Lucky Fellow, Mr. Smith" from the previous Bud Abbott and Lou Costello film Buck Privates (1941).
