Inspired by the success of Veronica Mars (2014)'s ability to raise funds by using the website Kickstarter, Zach Braff gave people the opportunity to invest in this movie using the website as well. He was looking to raise $2 million. Depending on the donation, people could get a video diary of the making of the movie, tickets to screenings, and for the highest level of $10,000, a credited part in the movie. The drive started on April 24, 2013 and lasted a month. Over $3 million was raised and 46,520 people contributed.
James Avery's final acting role.
In a conversation early in the film, Aidan Bloom's daughter, Grace, makes reference to the character (and movie) Yentl (1983), which co-starred Mandy Patinkin (who plays Avigdor, Yentl's love interest), who, in this film plays her grandfather, Gabe Bloom.
Alexander Chaplin, Michael Weston, Donald Faison, Zach Braff, Bob Clendenin, and Lesley David Baker are all Scrubs alumni.
The costume worn by Paul (Jim Parsons) on the set of the cheesy sci-fi series towards the film's end is the same one worn by the crew members of the 'Protector' in Galaxy Quest (1999).
"Sarah Bloom: You know, I don't think I ever told you this but, when I lost my sister you were the most helpful person to me. Gabe: Really? I mean, I'm glad if I was. i don't even remember what I said. Sarah Bloom: You said, "Nothing in life will call upon us to be more courageous than facing the fact that it ends. But on the other side of heartbreak is wisdom." Gabe: I said that? Sarah Bloom: Yeah. Gabe: That was good advice."
"Sarah Bloom: I'm glad to see you've kept your sense of humor. Gabe: What else am I going to do? Eventually things get tragic enough and then they circle around to comedy."
