Frostpunk 2 Console Edition Review: A Masterclass in Survival Strategy

City-builder games often challenge players with managing resources, engaging in war, or navigating political intrigue. Frostpunk 2, building on the foundation laid by its predecessor, carves its own niche. It’s a city-builder set in a desolate, frozen world where the primary objective isn’t just to thrive but to simply survive.

A New Era of Management

The most significant evolution in Frostpunk 2 is the shift in scale. You are no longer laying down individual roads or meticulously placing every single structure. Instead, the focus is on macro-management. You “break the frost” to create large districts dedicated to resource collection, food production, or housing. This change moves the gameplay away from micromanagement and towards a broader, more strategic overview of your city and its people.

The Weight of Law and Politics

Where Frostpunk 2 truly shines is in its complex political system. Every law you pass has profound and often conflicting consequences. Choosing a practical, industrial path may boost your resources, but it will inevitably clash with the religious factions. Conversely, siding with the zealots might improve hope but stifle progress. It’s a fascinating balancing act. I found myself restarting the campaign multiple times in the early hours, just to explore different political paths. Each approach is met with a formidable opposing force, ensuring you are constantly on the edge of your seat, second-guessing every decision.

The relentless weather remains a core antagonist. You must constantly prepare for plunging temperatures, heating failures, and the inevitable loss of citizens. These events demand quick, strategic thinking to ensure the survival of your populace. As your city grows, you unlock advanced technologies that help manage these micro-events, but they simultaneously introduce new, more complex challenges at a macro level.

Intuitive Controls on Console

One of the biggest concerns for any city-builder on a console is the control scheme. I first played the game on PC, where the keyboard and mouse combination felt perfect. However, the developers have done an exceptional job adapting the controls for the DualSense and Xbox controllers. They feel remarkably intuitive. The right trigger instantly brings up the construction menu, and you can even control the flow of time with a simple button press. After completing the tutorial, the controls become second nature. This seamless transition is largely thanks to the game’s focus on district-level management rather than the minute construction of roads.

A Visually Stunning Apocalypse

On the PlayStation 5, Frostpunk 2 is visually stunning. The game offers three graphical modes: a 30 FPS Quality mode, a 40 FPS mode (for 120Hz displays), and a 60 FPS Performance mode. Since the gameplay doesn’t demand lightning-fast reflexes, the 30 FPS mode is perfectly viable for those who want to soak in the high-fidelity visuals. I personally found the 40 FPS mode to be the perfect sweet spot between smoothness and graphical detail.

The art direction is breathtaking, contrasting the sprawling white snow with the grim, retro-industrial aesthetic of your buildings. The bustling city is brought to life by the fast-moving lights of its citizens. Even the council view, where you vote on new laws, has a distinct, atmospheric retro-court look. Playing on an OLED TV truly makes the visuals pop. For those using the PlayStation Portal, I recommend increasing the text size in the settings for a more comfortable reading experience.

Immersive Sound Design

The audio experience is just as impressive as the visuals. The sound design is fantastic, with the constant howl of the cold breeze emphasising the brutal temperature. The bangs and clicks from the factories underscore the manual labour driving your city, while the subtle chatter from the populace shifts depending on their mood. Playing with headphones is a truly immersive experience, engulfing you in the sounds of your struggling, surviving city.

Verdict

Frostpunk 2 has been available on PC, but its recent launch on consoles is a triumph. If you enjoyed the first game or are a fan of deep, challenging city-builders, this is a must-play. It offers incredible depth in its resource and political management systems, with compelling twists that will constantly keep you engaged. The game is both strategically demanding and visually stunning.

However, if your taste in strategy games leans more towards combat-heavy titles like Age of Empires, the relentless focus on survival and politics might not be for you. For everyone else, Frostpunk 2 is a brilliant and unforgiving journey into the frozen abyss.
