Airtel Priority Postpaid with faster and more stable 5G connectivity launched in India: plans & benefits

Airtel has become the first telecom operator to commercially deploy 5G network slicing, which will directly benefit postpaid users. Called Airtel Priority Postpaid, the feature is designed to offer faster and more stable connectivity during periods of heavy network congestion. The Priority Postpaid will be automatically rolled out to the existing postpaid users across individual and family plans, while new users can migrate to it through the Airtel app or stores.

What is 5G slicing and why does it matter?

5G slicing attempts to solve the network problem in crowded places. A similar feature is already live in a handful of countries, including the US, Singapore, the UK and Malaysia, which divide a network into virtual segments with dedicated performance levels for different types of users.

This is the first time users in India will also get to enjoy a similar benefit. Airtel says this helps maintain better speeds and lower latency even when overall network traffic is high. The feature could prove useful for users attending live events, travelling during peak hours, or working remotely on the move, where mobile networks often slow down due to congestion.

It provides a superior, more reliable, and dependable experience to our customers, whether they are attending a client call in traffic, or streaming at a packed concert, or booking a cab in a crowded market,” said Shashwat Sharma, MD and CEO, Airtel, at the launch.

Airtel Priority Postpaid plans

All existing Airtel postpaid plans have now been upgraded to Priority Postpaid plans. The company has added the new priority network access feature on top of the OTT subscriptions and cloud storage benefits already bundled with each plan, which is as follows:

The feature is currently exclusive to Airtel’s postpaid plans. That said, one would require a compatible standalone (SA) 5G smartphone with the latest software update installed to access the Priority Postpaid. Airtel says users can check device compatibility within the Airtel app.

There are no changes for prepaid users, and those who wish to access the feature will need to upgrade to any of the eligible Airtel postpaid plans mentioned above.

Airtel’s new Priority Postpaid service appears aimed at premium users who are willing to pay extra for dependable connectivity rather than just higher data limits. While Indian telecom users already get unlimited 5G on many plans, network consistency in crowded locations remains a common issue. Airtel’s network slicing approach could help the company differentiate itself from rivals like Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea in the premium postpaid segment.
