"Google Assistant Go works with entry-level phones and a variety of internet speeds"
Last month, Google released Android Oreo (Go edition) for budget smartphones. This version of Oreo is capable of running on low-end devices with even less than 1GB of RAM. At the launch, the brand announced that Android Oreo (Go edition) will come with a new set of Google apps, which are designed to be lighter and work on slower internet connections. Today, the search titan has introduced the Google Assistant Go edition for Android Go smartphones.
Google has announced that the Assistant Go edition works with entry-level devices and a variety of internet speeds. The app comes pre-installed on Android Oreo (Go edition) devices. The assistant is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai. Support for more languages will be added to the Assistant in the near future.
Just like the Google Assistant on standard Android Phones, the Assistant Go edition also lets you perform tasks using voice commands. You can trigger the Assistant on your phone either by holding the home button or opening the app itself. However, since it is designed for entry-level phones, it misses out on some features. For example, features like reminders, control for smart home devices, and games and services from other companies are not available for the Assistant Go edition. Over time, the company will be adding more features to its digital assistant for Android Go devices.
It's worth mentioning that the Google Assistant Go app isn't limited to just Android Oreo (Go edition) devices. It can be downloaded and installed on any entry-level smartphone that's low on RAM from the Google Play Store.
Android Oreo (Go edition)-powered smartphones are expected to be launched by Google partners by the end of this quarter. Several brands like Micromax, Nokia and Intex are on board to bring budget Android Go smartphones. Most recently, India's emerging telecom operator Reliance Jio was also confirmed as one of the partners for the initiative. The telco has partnered with the SoC manufacturer MediaTek for its Android Go devices.
