The base iPhone 17 might just be the iPhone to buy this year

Apple loves a showstopper. That “one more thing” that ends up grabbing headlines. This year, the spotlight fell on the all-new iPhone Air – a slim, experimental take on what the iPhone can be. But for most people, the real story isn’t the Air at all. It’s the standard iPhone 17. Apple has finally given its base model the upgrades users have been asking for: a bigger 6.3-inch display with ProMotion, improved battery life, and a sharper front camera, all at a price that stays comfortably below the Air and Pro tiers. It’s a practical blend of meaningful improvements and sensible pricing – and that makes the iPhone 17 the one to buy this year.

Pro features on a non-Pro iPhone?

Since last year’s iPhone 16 (review), Apple has been steadily adding ‘pro’ features to the base model, such as the Camera Control and Action buttons, and newer chipsets. With the iPhone 17, Apple added a few more pro features that further reduce the gap between the base and Pro models. Firstly, the iPhone 17 moves to a 6.3-inch display from last year’s 6.1-inch display. That alone is useful: more room for video, gaming and typing without needing to step up to last year’s 16 Plus or this year’s Air.

More importantly, Apple has added 120Hz ProMotion to the base model and boosted peak brightness to 3,000 nits. Those changes are not incremental. ProMotion makes scrolling, animations, and games feel markedly smoother. The extra brightness makes the phone far more usable outdoors. Apple also brings Always-On display and Ceramic Shield 2 for better scratch resistance, so the display upgrades are both functional and durable.

Better cameras on the base iPhone

On paper, Apple has kept the reliable 48MP main sensor, but this year the iPhone 17 ships with a 48MP Fusion main with optical quality 2x telephoto and a 48MP Fusion ultrawide, giving you wider framing options and cleaner macro shots. Apple also adds selectable .5x, 1x and 2x optical zoom points, which improves compositional flexibility without forcing you into a Pro-tier price.

The front camera jumps to an 18MP resolution, and Apple has brought Center Stage, which uses AI to expand the field of view automatically and can switch from portrait to landscape while holding the iPhone vertically. In short, the photography experience on both the rear and front is expected to be better for real-world use, particularly for content creators and individuals who frequently use video calling.

Faster A19 chipset

The iPhone 17 runs on the A19 chip, which Apple says is 20 per cent faster than the A18 in the iPhone 16. The A19 includes a 16-core neural engine, a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU. That is real headroom for gaming, photo processing and machine learning features in iOS 26. At the same time, the Pro models get the A19 Pro, which gets an extra GPU core. That said, Performance is no longer a reason to spend extra on Pro models unless you need the absolute top-end GPU or pro-class workflows.

Modest upgrades to battery and charging

Apple does not publish raw battery capacities, but the company claims the iPhone 17 delivers notably better endurance. Official numbers point to roughly eight more hours of video playback than the iPhone 16, and slightly faster wired charging is supported – 25W from 20W. Pair that with iOS 26 power management, and you get a device that should reduce daily battery anxiety. For many buyers, that matters more than a thinner profile.

Pricier than iPhone 16, still the best value for most people

This is where the iPhone 17 becomes a clear winner in the newest lineup. The iPhone 17 starts at Rs 82,900 for the 256GB, which is Rs 3,000 more than the iPhone 16’s launch price. However, you’re getting some solid upgrades for that extra amount – ProMotion, a larger, brighter display, better battery life and a stronger camera setup, at least on paper. We will have to review the iPhone 17 to confidently say if the upgrades translate well in real-world usage.

By contrast, the iPhone Air starts at Rs 1,19,900 for the 256 GB model. The Air is an intriguing device: ultra-thin, light, and fashionable. But its higher price, single rear camera and smaller battery are real trade-offs. I’ve written a separate article on who I feel Apple is courting with the iPhone Air. The base iPhone 17, with all its upgrades and significantly less money, becomes the smarter buy for most people.

Who is the iPhone 17 for?

Who should consider the Air or Pro instead?

The iPhone 17 is the model Apple should be judged on this year. It is the one that delivers upgrades people actually feel day to day: a bigger, smoother, brighter display, improved cameras, better battery and a faster chip. It keeps the price sensible compared with the Air and the Pro models, which have all received a price bump in India compared to their predecessors.
