JioHotstar has introduced a ChatGPT-led conversational feature in India that adds voice and text search to its streaming app. Powered by OpenAI’s APIs, it lets viewers look for content using everyday language in multiple Indian languages, cutting down the need to scroll through menus or type exact titles.
Instead of skimming rows of thumbnails, users can simply say what they’re in the mood for. A request like “suggest something we can watch with parents” or “show today’s match highlights” brings up recommendations that take context and situation into account. During live sports, viewers can also ask for scores, key moments, or player details without leaving the stream, making the app feel more interactive while a match is on.
The feature is rolling out in phases across live and on-demand content. JioHotstar and OpenAI also plan a two-way integration, where people asking entertainment-related questions inside ChatGPT may see recommendations and links from JioHotstar’s catalogue. That extends discovery beyond the app and into everyday queries.
Most streaming services already personalise recommendations, but finding something to watch still involves browsing. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video rely on viewing history and algorithm-driven rows, while Disney+ Hotstar and SonyLIV highlight trending titles and curated picks. Voice search exists on some smart TVs, but it usually works as a shortcut for titles or genres. JioHotstar’s approach adds a conversational layer, allowing follow-up questions and more specific prompts instead of one-off searches.
The launch comes as India’s streaming market gets crowded and households juggle multiple subscriptions. Platforms are under pressure to make discovery easier and keep viewers engaged. Multilingual support could also help in homes where people watch content in different languages. For viewers, the feature may make it quicker to find something everyone agrees on, especially in shared households. How useful it feels will depend on how well it handles mixed languages, regional references, and nuanced requests. Like other AI-driven tools, its recommendations are likely to improve as it learns from user interactions.
JioHotstar has not announced a separate fee for the feature, and it is expected to arrive as part of the existing app experience. If users take to it, conversational search could become a new area of competition among streaming platforms.
