MediaTek Dimensity 8200 overview: best-in-class performance with incredible power efficiency

It was just last month that MediaTek unveiled its flagship chipset for 2023 smartphones – the MediaTek Dimensity 9200. And now, it’s introducing an SoC that boasts similar top-of-the-line features while targeting affordable flagships. The smartphones powered by MediaTek Dimensity 8200 are set to arrive soon, so before that let’s take a closer look at why it deserves your attention.

High on power, low on power consumption

The MediaTek Dimensity 8200 possesses best-in-class clock speeds with its four Cortex-A78 cores going up to 3.1GHz. While these cores are meant for heavy tasks like gaming or apps like Photoshop, there are four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz. Combine the power-efficient architecture with the 4nm fabrication process, and the chipset promises impressive battery efficiency.

The chipset also comes with an ARM Mali-G610 MC6 graphics processor. It has a 4MB L3 cache and supports high-speed quad-channel LPDDR5 RAM with speeds of up to 6,400Mbps. For storage, it supports the UFS 3.1 technology.

Gaming gets a serious upgrade

The new GPU offers 8 percent higher performance when compared to the previous generation. But as we have highlighted time and again, MediaTek SoCs aren’t just about core hardware, especially when it comes to gaming. The MediaTek Dimensity 8200 features the latest HyperEngine 6.0 gaming tech. Be it frame drops, jitters, or touch misses, all of these things are a thing of the past with Frame Rate Smoother 2.0, resulting in enjoyable gameplay. With Smart Resource Optimization, the devices will be able to offer better power efficiency for the CPU while ensuring that there’s no compromise on the gaming experience. Thanks to MediaTek AI-VRS (variable rate shading) technology, the processor is able to identify high and low-detail regions to minimise power consumption while optimising scene quality and frame rates. It also comes with Vulkan SDK, promising realistic graphics with ray tracing.

There are several connectivity enhancements as well such as Wi-Fi / Bluetooth coexistence and 5G Modem Express. Gamers would also appreciate the presence of Bluetooth LE Audio Technology that offers Dual-Link True Wireless Stereo Audio.

Promises eye-catching visuals

With MediaTek MiraVision 785, the Dimensity 8200 supports superfast and supersharp displays. Devices powered by the SoC can offer up to 120Hz refresh rate with crisp WQHD+ resolution, whereas full HD+ panels can offer a higher refresh rate of up to 180Hz. To enhance the multimedia experience, the chip comes with HDR10+ Adaptive media support, AI-powered SDR-to-HDR video playback, and 4K AV1 media decoding engine.

Then there’s MediaTek Intelligent Display Sync 2.0 which automatically changes the refresh rate as per the content / game being displayed to provide a smooth viewing experience. Ensuring that your eyes don’t get damaged in dim environments, it comes with Smart BluLight Defender.

Tailor-made for shutterbugs

The latest chipset from MediaTek comprises Imagiq 785, a 14-bit HDR-ISP. It can allow one to capture HDR videos from triple shooters simultaneously or record videos from dual cameras to get cinematic bokeh. In terms of resolution, the processor supports up to 320MP primary cameras with support for 4K HDR video recording at 60fps. Another camera configuration could be three 32MP sensors. For videography, the chipset comes with electronic image stabilisation.

Thanks to AI, the chipset also offers impressive noise reduction, which will come in handy in low light.

Enhanced AI capabilities

Speaking of AI, the all-new Dimensity 8200 features MediaTek APU 580. The AI processor comes with two performance cores, and one flexible core. As per the ETHZ 5.0 benchmark, it’s 13 percent faster than its predecessor. Apart from display and camera enhancements, the AI capabilities will also improve multimedia and social video experiences.

All-round connectivity features

Rounding up the impressive spec sheet of MediaTek Dimensity 8200, this SoC comes with a wide range of connectivity options. Its integrated 5G modem supports the latest 3GPP Release-16 and offers 3CC sub-6GHz networks. For next-gen networks, it supports peak download speeds of up to 4.7Gbps. There’s also MediaTek 5G UltraSave 2.0 that ensures that the devices powered by the chip can offer significant power savings.

The processor offers tri-band Wi-Fi 6E 2×2 with MediaTek Wi-Fi Fast Path technology. It also comes with support for the latest Bluetooth 5.3. For navigation, it has GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and supports all the popular technologies like GPs, BeiDou, Glonass, and NavIC, among others.

Similar to other chipsets in the MediaTek Dimensity series, the Dimensity 8200 SoC supports Dimensity 5G Open Resource Architecture. This will allow phonemakers to harness the capabilities of the chip better by finetuning camera, APU, display, or connectivity features. Devices with MediaTek Dimensity 8200 are expected to be on the shelves soon, which means you won’t have to wait for long.
