How MediaTek is powering the next wave of flip and fold smartphones

Innovation isn’t just about packing in the latest tech, it’s also about creating devices that are visually stunning and unique. This is especially true for foldable devices, which offer an entirely new approach to design. With foldable devices, manufacturers have to consider not only the usual specifications like performance and battery life but also the physical design and functionality of the device. This puts pressure on component manufacturers as they will have to come up with better components to match the demanding needs of newer, more capable devices to ensure that they can live up to their fullest potential.

Thankfully, MediaTek is no stranger to pressure. The company’s chipsets have been used in a variety of devices, from smartphones to smart home devices, and now, they are making their way into the world of foldable devices. MediaTek’s chipsets are designed to offer high performance and low power consumption, making them an ideal choice for the unique demands of foldable devices.

The current generation of foldable smartphones can be quite expensive due to the substantial amount of investment in engineering and advanced technologies required to manufacture them. As such, buyers will no doubt expect the best possible performance from their smartphones.

This is where MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000+ processor comes into play. This flagship-grade processor is pretty much tailored to the needs of foldable smartphones. In fact, two folding devices powered by this awesome processor are already here. The OPPO Find N2 Flip is a phone that folds downwards creating a very compact device that will fit any pocket. The Tecno Phantom V Fold is a smartphone that folds outwards, which reveals a much larger display.

Before we get into talking more about these awesome new smartphones. Let’s take a while and see what makes the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ SoC such a great choice for these smartphones.

Powerful enough to take on new challenges

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ packs a whole lot of performance and is ready for pretty much anything. The chipset is based on the 4nm node and features one Cortex X2 ultra core, three Cortex A710 power cores and four Cortex A510 efficiency cores. On top of this, the Dimensity 9000+ comes with an Arm Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. Altogether, users can expect a 5 percent boost in CPU performance and a 10 percent improvement in GPU performance compared to its predecessor.

This means more than just better gaming performance and smoother use. It gives software engineers the freedom to better explore the new folding form factor and introduce features that make the best use of the design without sacrificing performance.

Efficient, yet powerful

The use of the 4nm process on the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ has multiple benefits. First off, it allows the chipset to offer better power efficiency without sacrificing performance. The smaller node allows for smaller transistors, which require less power. It also allows for a greater number of transistors to fit inside a chip of a fixed size, which ensures better, performance numbers. The fact that Dimensity 9000+ also comes with a separate cluster of cores for efficiency means that the chipset will only use a small amount of battery power for everyday use.

Power efficiency is very important for foldable smartphones. The unique form factor means that engineers have limited space available for batteries. Further, folding phones also have multiple displays, including one very large display which can require a lot of battery power.

Display of the future

Speaking of the display, smartphone manufacturers would want users to make the most of the larger screen real estate offered by folding smartphones. The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ supports up to 144Hz WQHD+ displays or super-fast 180Hz FHD+ displays. As if that wasn’t enough, MediaTek’s latest Wi-Fi display technology can support up to 4K60 HDR10+ videos. Meanwhile, MediaTek Intelligent Display Sync 2.0 allows for more intelligent adaptive refresh rates that fluctuate based on the intensity of action that is being displayed.

This lets smartphone manufacturers make the most of the larger, yet compact displays on folding devices. At the same time, users would be able to enjoy the same quality and features that one would get on traditional, non-folding smartphone displays.

5G-ready

MediaTek’s newest flagship chipset features an integrated 5G modem with the 3GPP Release-16 standard technology. This amplifies sub-6GHz performance by up to 7Gbps via 3CC Carrier Aggregation. Further, the chip also enables 5G Dual SIM Dual Active support, allowing smartphone users to utilize two 5G SIM cards at the same time.

This means that folding smartphones will be able to make the best of 5G connectivity. It will ensure super fast download speeds, smooth 4K video streaming, and extremely low latency for online gaming!

The power of the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ and the benefits it offers for folding phones can already be seen in two key smartphones.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip features a flip-up design that reveals its folding display. The design is very reminiscent of flip phones of old and the overall design makes it a very compact smartphone. It also features the largest cover screen yet on a smartphone, letting users get the most out of the device without the need to constantly open the device.

Then there is the Tecno Phantom V Fold which features a screen that folds outwards. There is also a smaller, secondary screen on the outside. This allows users to use the device like a traditional smartphone when folded. However, they can then enjoy all the benefits of a big-screen tablet by simply folding open the device.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip is already on sale in India and it is already a great success thanks to the excellent value on offer. The Tecno Phantom V Fold is the most recently launched of the duo and it should make quite a dent in the segment as well.

Both these devices pack cutting-edge hinge technologies to ensure a smooth and even fold that creates a minimal crease. On top of those, buyers also get the best possible camera technologies on these smartphones. Both these devices pack multi-camera setups with 50MP primary cameras. Buyers also get AMOLED displays and fast charging.

As one can see, both these devices are at the cutting edge of what is currently possible in smartphone technology and this has been made possible thanks to the power of MediaTek and its powerful processor. We eagerly anticipate what MediaTek has in store for us in the future and how it will continue to push the boundaries of smartphone innovation and technology, leaving us in awe of its remarkable advancements.
