POCO has confirmed that the POCO M8 5G will launch in India on January 8th at 12 noon IST, with sales going live on Flipkart shortly after. The company hasn’t shared the full specifications sheet yet, but early teasers suggest the M8 5G will change things mainly on the design side rather than bring a major shift in hardware.

That would be a departure for the M-series. Until now, POCO’s M-phones have focussed largely on price and performance, paying relatively less attention to how the device looks or feels. With the M8 5G, POCO is putting more emphasis on form factor. The company claims it is the slimmest phone in its segment, measuring 7.35mm thick and weighing around 178 grams. In a category where phones have been getting heavier due to larger batteries, a slimmer profile could matter to users who prioritise comfort.

The phone looks more design-oriented than earlier M-series models. The POCO M8 5G uses a dual-tone rear finish, with teasers pointing to a mix of matte surfaces and vegan leather. The camera module is placed centrally in a squircle-shaped housing, with two rear cameras and an LED flash. It is a cleaner layout than what POCO has typically used in this lineup. Apart from the black variant shown so far, the phone is expected to arrive in light blue and black-silver dual-tone finishes.

Most of the remaining details are still based on leaks. The POCO M8 5G is tipped to feature a 6.77-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which would be an upgrade over previous M-series phones. It is expected to run on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. POCO has confirmed a 50MP primary camera, while information about the secondary sensor remains unclear.

The phone is also said to pack a 5,520mAh battery with 45W fast charging, along with an IP65 rating for dust and splash resistance. On paper, that puts it in line with what most mid-range buyers expect today, rather than setting a new benchmark.

The POCO M8 5G will enter a crowded price segment. Redmi’s Note, Realme’s number lineup, and Samsung’s Galaxy M and F phones already offer similar displays and battery sizes in the Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 range. Samsung usually has an edge in software support, while Redmi and Realme tend to compete more aggressively on specifications.

POCO may find some room to differentiate in terms of design. A slimmer, lighter phone could appeal to buyers who feel mid-range phones have become unnecessarily bulky. Pricing has not been announced, but expectations are around Rs 15,000. If Poco manages to stay close to that figure, the M8 5G could make sense for users who value comfort and design alongside the usual mid-range essentials.
