Redmi Turbo 5, Turbo 5 Max with a 9,000mAh battery and MediaTek Dimensity 9500s to debut in China this week

Highlights
  • Redmi Turbo 5 series is launching in China on January 29th.
  • The Turbo 5 Max is getting the massive 9,000mAh battery.
  • POCO could bring the phones globally.

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has confirmed the launch of the Redmi Turbo 5 series in China. The lineup will feature two models: Redmi Turbo 5 and Redmi Turbo 5 Max. As their names suggest, the Redmi Turbo 5 series will keep performance in focus with specifications such as a mammoth 9,000mAh battery and the new MediaTek Dimensity 9500s chipset. This smartphone series would also cater to the near-flagship segment with the Redmi Turbo 5 Max.

The Redmi Turbo 5 series is set to launch in China on January 29th at 7 pm, which would be 4:30 pm IST in India. In addition to the two phones, the Redmi Buds 8 Pro and the Redmi Pad 2 Pro Harry Potter Edition will also be unveiled at the launch event. Redmi has yet to reveal any plans for these devices’ launch outside China.

The Redmi Turbo 5 Max will be the highlight of the lineup with a massive 9,000mAh battery confirmed for the smartphone. This will be paired with 100W wired and 27W reverse wired charging. With this battery capacity, the Redmi Turbo 5 Max should be reliable enough for at least two-days worth of juice. The battery capacity is impressive, but if the phone launches here in India, it still wouldn’t offer the biggest battery as the Realme P4 Power has a bigger 10,001mAh cell.

The smartphone will also be the first to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s SoC. This is a new flagship chipset built on the 3nm process with accelerated performance and improved power efficiency. The handset is also said to have scored over 3.61 million on the AnTuTu benchmark, keeping it on par with other flagships powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC. Redmi has also confirmed LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for the Turbo 5 Max.

The Redmi Turbo 5 Max will house a dual-camera setup at the back with a Light Hunter 600 sensor for the primary camera. Since the phone is performance-focused, we don’t expect photography as the phone’s key feature, but we should still wait for official details to see how they stack up against rivals. Up front, it will feature a 6.83-inch M10 OLED display with 3,500 nits peak brightness, high-frequency PWM + DC dimming, and near-zero flicker across all brightness levels.

As for the standard Redmi Turbo 5, this smartphone will feature a 6.59-inch display with a metal frame and a glass back. Both phones look similar with a vertical camera design, like the iPhone 17. The Redmi Turbo 5 Max is also coming in a ‘Sunshine Orange’ colour, which looks quite like the iPhone 17 Pro’s orange shade. It seems like Apple has made the bright orange colour quite popular for other OEMs.

For now, the Redmi Turbo 5 series is confirmed to launch only in China, and the phones would make good sense for buyers there who prioritise battery life and performance. There’s speculation that the Redmi Turbo 5 might launch as POCO X8 Pro outside China, and the Redmi Turbo 5 Max as the POCO X8 Pro Max, so there’s still hope for anyone looking forward to the Redmi Turbo 5 lineup.

If so, then the POCO X8 Pro Max (Redmi Turbo 5 Max) is expected to be a popular pick for anyone who wants a phone solely focused on performance and endurance. The smartphone might also offer a well-rounded package, so the POCO X8 Pro Max could be worth waiting for.
