Redmi has quietly unveiled the Redmi 17 5G in China as its latest budget smartphone. The new model focuses on delivering a large display, long battery life and essential features such as 5G connectivity and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, while shipping with Xiaomi’s latest HyperOS 3 software.
The launch comes amid rumours surrounding the global version of the Redmi 17 5G. Xiaomi is expected to offer different hardware and design for international markets, with alleged global variants already surfacing on certification platforms, including India’s BIS database.
Redmi 17 5G specifications
The Redmi 17 5G features a 6.9-inch HD+ LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 240Hz touch sampling rate, DC dimming, TUV Rheinland triple eye protection certification and support for Wet Touch 2.0. It runs HyperOS 3 out of the box. Powering the device is the 6nm Unisoc T8300 chipset paired with up to 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage, along with a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion.
The phone houses a 6,300mAh battery with support for 15W wired charging, 7.5W reverse wired charging and PD/QC charging protocols. Xiaomi claims the battery is designed to maintain its health for up to four years. For photography, the Redmi 17 5G includes a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.4 and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Compared to last year’s Redmi 15 5G launched in China, the new model appears to prioritise affordability, with cuts in several areas. The Redmi 15 5G offered a sharper FHD+ 144Hz display, Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset, larger 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, faster 33W charging and a 50MP primary camera. While the Redmi 17 5G retains a similarly large display and battery-focused approach, it scales back several hardware components to keep the costs in check.
The Redmi 17 global version is expected to differ in several key areas. Previous leaks have suggested the international model could feature a Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset, a larger 7,500mAh battery and a redesigned rear camera module.
Redmi 17 5G price and availability
The Redmi 17 5G is now available in China in Cold Mist Blue, Star Rock Black and Feather Mist White colour options. Pricing is as follows:
- 4GB + 128GB: CNY 999 (around Rs 14,100)
- 6GB + 128GB: CNY 1,199 (around Rs 17,000)
The Redmi 15 launched at the same price last year in China but the base variant was 6GB. The same price but downgraded specs are a direct result of the memory crisis that has hit the industry.
The Redmi 17 5G is aimed at users who value battery life and a large display over performance. However, those considering the phone outside China may want to wait for the global variant, as leaks indicate it could offer a noticeably different hardware package than the model announced today.
