WhatsApp Web gets voice and video calling with call transfer support
WhatsApp has started rolling out voice and video calling support on WhatsApp Web, bringing the browser version closer to feature parity with its mobile and desktop apps. Alongside one-on-one and group calls, the update also introduces call transfer between devices, waiting rooms for group calls, and support for screen sharing. The rollout is gradual, which means the new features may not be available to all users immediately. Notably, the feature is still not available on the desktop app.

Eligible users can now make and receive individual and group voice or video calls directly from WhatsApp Web by opening a chat and selecting the phone or video call icon. The browser may ask for microphone and camera permissions before the first call.

Calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption, while screen sharing is also supported during video calls. WhatsApp says users need a stable internet connection and a supported browser for the best experience. Those who do not see the new calling options may have to wait for the wider rollout or update their browser.
A notable addition is call transfer, which lets users move an ongoing call between linked devices without disconnecting. For example, someone can start a call on their smartphone and continue it on WhatsApp Web after sitting down at a desk. This makes switching between devices more seamless, especially during longer conversations or work-related calls.
Features available on WhatsApp Web calls
WhatsApp Web now supports waiting rooms for group voice and video calls. Hosts can enable the “Require approval to join” option when creating a call, allowing them to approve participants before they enter. Users can also create call links and schedule group conversations directly from the browser.
The company has also improved QuickHD, which is designed to deliver high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call. On iPhone, the feature works alongside Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum controls introduced earlier to improve overall call quality.
The update strengthens WhatsApp’s position against services such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom, which have long offered browser-based calling. While those platforms remain more suitable for large meetings and workplace collaboration, WhatsApp’s web calling experience is aimed at users who want quick, encrypted personal or small-group conversations without switching devices.
For existing WhatsApp users, the update removes a reason to rely on the desktop app, making the browser version a more practical option for everyday communication. However, since the rollout is being phased, users who don’t see the feature yet may simply need to wait until it reaches their account.
