Xiaomi 17 series debuts in China with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, secondary displays, and massive batteries
Xiaomi has officially launched its latest flagship lineup in China, the Xiaomi 17 series, skipping the “16” branding altogether. The series includes the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and the larger Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. Xiaomi has also skipped the ‘Ultra’ branding for Pro Max this time. All three phones arrive powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, making them the first to feature the flagship chipset. The Xiaomi 17 series carries a mix of bold design choices and performance upgrades. Interestingly, Xiaomi’s naming strategy and model spread mirror Apple’s iPhone 17 series, which also includes standard, Pro, and Pro Max variants.

Xiaomi 17: Compact but powerful
The standard Xiaomi 17 continues with a compact form factor featuring a 6.3-inch flat AMOLED display with ultra-slim 1.18mm bezels and up to 3,500 nits peak brightness. The phone gets Xiaomi’s Dragon Crystal Glass for protection along with IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance.

Probably the biggest upgrade for the Xiaomi 17 is its massive 7,000mAh battery – a major feat for its small size. Xiaomi also claims it lasts longer than the iPhone 17 when paired with a magnetic power bank. Xiaomi 17 also features a new three-dimensional ring cold pump cooling system, said to be three times more effective than traditional vapor chambers for sustained performance during gaming or AI workloads.
The camera setup on the Xiaomi 17 includes a 1/1.31-inch 50MP Light Fusion 950 sensor with OIS for the main camera, joined by a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP telephoto with a Leica 60mm floating lens design. A 50MP front camera handles selfies. There’s also a new Master Portrait Mode that offers professional-grade imaging with natural skin tones and detailed hair rendering.
Xiaomi 17 Pro: Another compact flagship
With the 17 Pro, Xiaomi has added another compact model in its flagship lineup. Smaller than the Xiaomi 15 Pro’s 6.7-inch display, the Xiaomi 17 Pro now features a 6.3-inch screen like the standard 17 and also like the iPhone 17 Pro. But what makes it different from both phones is a 2.7-inch AMOLED “Magic Back Screen” integrated into the camera module.
It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t Xiaomi’s first attempt at secondary displays. The Mi 11 Ultra also housed a secondary display, but that was smaller with limited functionality. The Xiaomi 17 Pro’s rear display can show notifications, serve as an always-on clock, or even act as a selfie viewfinder when using the rear cameras.
Under the hood is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with a 6,300mAh battery supporting 100W wired charging. This is a slight upgrade from the Xiaomi 15 Pro’s 6,100mAh battery and 90W fast charging.
The Pro also upgrades the camera system through Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica. It offers a 50MP Light Hunter 950L main sensor, a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto lens with OIS, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP front camera.
Xiaomi 17 Pro Max: the bigger and premium model
At the top of the lineup is the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, which introduces several firsts for the company. The device features a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display, 3,500 nits brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, and stronger third-generation Dragon Crystal Glass for durability. This is even bigger than the Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s 6.7-inch display (review), which was already a large phone. Like the Pro, it also includes a secondary display but a slightly larger 2.9-inch AMOLED panel built into the rear camera island.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip but gets enhanced cooling and higher storage options with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. Powering it all is a huge 7,500mAh battery, using high-silicon technology to balance size and capacity, with support for 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The Leica-powered camera system on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max includes a 50MP Light Hunter 950L main sensor (1/1.28-inch), a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto for zoom. The setup is essentially the same as the Pro model.
In China, the Xiaomi 17 has been launched at a starting price of CNY 4,499 (Rs 55,993 approx). Xiaomi 17 Pro starts at CNY 4,999 (Rs 62,215 approx), while the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has been launched at CNY 5,999 (Rs 74,661 approx). Prices would vary depending on the market. For reference, the Xiaomi 15 launched at a starting price of Rs 64,999 in India, while the Xiaomi 15 Ultra was launched at Rs 1,09,999.
With the Xiaomi 17 lineup, the brand is doubling down on a strategy that mirrors Apple’s playbook – clear tiering with Standard, Pro, and Pro Max models – but differentiates itself with bigger batteries, experimental secondary displays, and aggressive performance claims. It’s a calculated move to position Xiaomi as a premium alternative to both Apple and Samsung, while still retaining its “specs-for-value” identity.
For buyers, the advice is simple: if Xiaomi brings these phones to India at competitive prices, the standard Xiaomi 17 could be the compact flagship to watch, especially with that huge 7,000mAh battery. The Pro makes sense if you value the rear screen and Leica-backed cameras, while the Pro Max caters to those who want an ultra-premium, large-screen device without crossing into “Ultra” pricing. For now, Indian consumers may want to hold off on purchases in the premium Android flagship segment and see how Xiaomi prices the 17 series against Vivo X and Galaxy S models.
