Xiaomi has officially unveiled its latest flagship lineup, the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, globally at MWC 2026. The flagships will launch in India on March 11th. The Xiaomi 17 series continues the brand’s push in the premium segment, focusing heavily on camera performance, large batteries, and flagship performance. Notably, the Xiaomi 17 Pro variants with secondary displays will not be coming to India for now, keeping things simple with just the standard and Ultra models.

Xiaomi 17 is priced at EUR 999 for the single memory configuration with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, while the Ultra has been launched at EUR 1499. The India prices of Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra will be announced on March 11th.

Globally, the Xiaomi 17 is available in black, blue, pink, and green finishes. In India, Xiaomi has launched the phone only in black, blue, and green variants. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is available only in black in India. The design language remains premium and camera-centric, particularly on the Ultra model, which carries a bold rear camera module that reinforces its photography-focused positioning.

Display and performance

Both smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagship chipset, ensuring top-tier performance across gaming, multitasking, and AI-driven tasks.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra features a large 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, catering to users who prefer large screens for media and productivity. In contrast, the Xiaomi 17 offers a more compact 6.3-inch AMOLED display with peak brightness of 3,500 nits, making it one of the few smaller flagship options on the market. The smaller phone weighs just 191 grams, while the Ultra weighs around 219 grams. Both flagships feature IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Cameras are the key differentiator

Cameras are where the Xiaomi 17 Ultra clearly distinguishes itself. The device is equipped with a Leica-branded triple-camera system comprising a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 200MP telephoto camera. The setup is designed to deliver versatility across landscape, portrait, and street photography. LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) is a new sensor technology debuting on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, preventing highlights from blowing out and shadows from crushing by capturing times more light. This theoretically enables DSLR-like, high-dynamic-range photos and, especially, video in challenging lighting conditions

Additionally, the 200MP periscope telephoto lens offers a 3.2x–4.3x (75–100mm) continuous optical zoom, delivering high-resolution, variable-focal-length images. This system utilises a movable mechanical zoom, ensuring full-sensor quality across all focal lengths without relying on digital cropping.

Xiaomi has also refreshed its optional photography kit for the Ultra, introducing a redesigned ergonomic grip and magnetic attachment system to enhance the camera-like shooting experience.

The Xiaomi 17, while more compact, still carries a strong Leica-backed camera system. It includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP telephoto lens featuring a Leica 60mm floating lens design. For users who want flagship-grade photography without opting for a larger device, the standard Xiaomi 17 is an alternative.

The inclusion of Leica branding continues Xiaomi’s strategy of strengthening its imaging credentials in the premium space, positioning the Ultra as a photography-first flagship while keeping the standard model practical and compact.

Ahead of the launch, Xiaomi and Leica issued a statement announcing that their partnership has moved from “co-engineering to co-creation”. “We are glad to announce that Xiaomi and Leica have entered a new era in our partnership, moving from co-engineering to strategic co-creation. The strategic upgrade reflects our long-lasting shared pursuit of pure imagery that time can’t dim.” What this means for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, in particular, is something we intend to find out soon.

Battery and charging

The battery is another highlight of the series. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra packs a 6,000mAh battery with support for 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 17 gets a 6,330mAh cell – impressive for a compact flagship – and 100W charging support. Both phones should still last an entire day with ease on moderate to heavy use.

The Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra arrive relatively late to India’s flagship cycle, stepping into a segment already occupied by the OPPO Find X9 series, Vivo X300 Pro, and the recently unveiled Galaxy S26 lineup. How well the new Xiaomi flagships compete will become clearer with detailed testing and comparisons.

On paper, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra makes more sense for users who want maximum camera flexibility, particularly long-range zoom, along with a large, immersive display. The standard Xiaomi 17, meanwhile, caters to those who prefer a more compact flagship form factor without sacrificing battery endurance or Leica-tuned photography.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to size preference and how much value you place on the Ultra’s advanced telephoto system and camera accessories. For buyers in India, you will have to wait until March 11th to know the prices of the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra before making a buying decision.
