Awesome laptop review from a gamer's point... and query for fellow owners too...

Hello everybody,nn****************************************************************n* Initially, To fellow Y510p owners:nDo you all have the issue that high end games like CRYSIS (2007), Batman arkham city, NFS Most wanted (2012), face major lag when the AC power is removed and the lap is running on only the battery? THe games run on very high/ ultra settings on power with no lag issues, but when the power goes off, it becomes super laggy immediateley.nnI believe the nvidia is downclocked immediately and automaticaly when on battery.nni just wish to know if this is normal or if i got a defective piece? Please try and let me know guys!!.. It's really worrying me :-|nn*************************************************************************nNow, for all of you hoping to but this laptop:nnFirst, I will address some changes in the specifications given by flipkartnn*The laptop is actually a lenovo Y510p model, with a Haswell chip. The chip might be 4700/ 4702 depending on the batch you receive (4700 is recommended for gamers).n*The graphic card in this laptop is a new Nvidia gt755M (basically an overclocked 750M with Optimus and boost enabled).nNote: As of now, there is no GT755M SLI option available, it may be available in the future or nvidia will enable compatibility with 750M SLI (nothing confirmed by Nvidia or lenovo yet)nnPROSn*Build quality is tactile and sturdy when compared to many other mainstream laptop manufacturers in the 50 - 75k price rangen*The backlit keyboard is amazing and completey revolutionizes the look and feel of the laptop. The bezel design makes it really comfortable to type.n*Overall, the laptop looks nice , it looks like a businessman's notebook until you open it and the keyboard comes on!!! :-). Then people will know it is no old man's machine ;-)n*Gaming is a fantastic experience on this laptop, but only when it runs on power for high end games. High end games will lag on battery as the nvidia card will automatically downclock when power is removed (yet to be officially confirmed, but I know this by experience as I game a lot)n* You can run games like CRYSIS, Batman arkham city, NFS MW on Very HIGH/ ULTRA settings. Games like Call of duty MW3 will run on EXTRA setting . I recommend turning off Direct X 11 tesselation as this casuses major throttling.n*I was really surprised when this laptop played FARCRY 3 on very high/ ultra settings with HDAO setting!!! although the heat from the vent will burn your fingers :-) as the nvidia will be overclocked like hell.n*The FULL HD display is really nice with good color rendering, inclining more to the warmer side. Movie - watching is a joy, but any movie which is not 1080p print will look like a cheap quality video.n*The on board JBL speakers are really good... simple as thatn*The Ultrabay option available will give you the flexibilty to add an SLI, bluray driver or an extra cooling fan if you want to in the future.n*I get an average battery backup of upto 3 - 4 hours because the nvidia is downclocked automatically on battery. The maximum it has given me is 4.5 hours.nnCONS:n*There are some heating issues on the heavy gaming front, inspite of using a four core cooler; but nothing the laptop can handle. I have played FARCRY 3 (highly graphic intensive game) on VH/ ULTRA for about 10 hours straight and faced occasional throttling issues, which is to be expected.n*The space and the left control key feels a tad weaker than the rest of the keys on about a month's usage. (I don't know why.. but this happens on all the Y510p)n*It is kinda heavy, getting on the favorable side of 3 KGs, so you better a little built if you want to lug it aroung everywhere.n*As mentioned above, you cannot play heavy games on the nvidia on battery. It is advisable to switch to the onboard Intel HD 4600 card (from nvidia control panel) on battery as it performs better than the 755M when on battery.n*The Nvidia 755M comes with optimus technology, so it works in tandem with the Inel. This becomes a headache eventually as the control panel must be configured by you for the games as you wish. You will learn this in time :-)n*Windows 8 still has many bugs I don't like and behaves like a 5 year old some times, but the new patches have improved performance and boot times drastically.nnVerdict: This is definaltely a really good buy for serious gamers who are on a serious budget because the next option from this one is an Alienware, which is almost double the price!!!nnBasically, the lenovo Y510p is a poor man's Alienware.. and there can be no higher praise than that!!!!nnHope this helped.. and fellow Y510p owners.. pelase pitch in guys and answer my query.nnThanks and regards,nLeslie

Good Choice for power users

I purchased this laptop two days ago and I thought I'd like to share my experiences about it....nnPros:n* As usual Flipkart delivered this product ahead of time (1.5 days against the scheduled time of 2-3 working days).n* Good overall performance. Windows Experience Index of 5.9 which is well above average.n* The screen is extremely crisp and clear. I wasn't sure if the Full HD screen (1920 x 1080) was worth the extra cost. It's worth every penny and I don't feel like using the older 1366 x 768 res screens anymore.n* I haven't tested the graphics performance in detail, but this laptop is able to handle Skyrim on Ultra High settings at an average of 30-35 FPS. Note that the graphics card is an nVidia GT755M unit and not the GT750M as listed in the product description. The GT755M is slightly better. n* Another review for the Y500 says that performance while running at FullHD resolution is poor, and that lowering the resolution drastically reduces image/gaming quality. This was something I was worried about and was one of the first things I tested. I did not notice any degradation in the image quality other than what could be expected from reducing the pixel count. In-game FPS rates improved at lower resolutions.n* Does not overheat easily. There chassis is well equipped with a large fan + heatsink on the left side and an even larger vent on the underside.n* Great speakers which are amongst the best I've heard from a laptop's inbuilt unitsn* Great battery life. While doing office stuff and browsing the battery lasts for just over 3 hours. Gaming and watching movies reduce this to slightly more than one hour.nnnCons:n* The screen is very glossy and causes reflections when used in sunlight. Fortunately, the display is bright enough to alleviate this to some extent.n* The '0' key on the numeric keypad is half the normal size (to accommodate the arrow keys). This takes some getting used to.n* There are just three USB ports. At least four USB ports would be better. Even the smaller Lenovo U4xx series have 4 USB ports. Additionally, the USB 3.0 ports placed on the left side a very close together so it is difficult to use a USB dongle and a large pen-drive together (one of them will have to be plugged into the USB 2.0 port on the right side of the system.n* The trackpad is very responsive. However, the click action (especially for right-click) requires too much effort on the part of the user. I suspect this is also a matter of getting used to the system.n* The McAfee Anti-virus trial that is pre-installed is a massive piece of bloatware (taking 450+ MB of RAM) that causes program stuttering. I will be removing that as soon as I buy a different internet security suite.nnnMisc. Info.n*From the images on the site, the chamfers (angles) moulded into the outer lid of the laptop look very prominent (not to my taste, though others might like them). Happily, in the actual product, these are much more subtle.n* The DVD drive can be swapped with an additional UltraBay GT755M video card (scheduled to be launched in October 2013) which works with the inbuilt one in SLI mode for even better graphics performance. Note that installing this additional graphics card will require the purchase of a new 170W charger unit as well.n* Lenovo thankfully has resisted from bloating the system with a ton of trial software like many other vendors. There are a few software installed, but they are comparatively smaller in size and can be easily uninstalled.n* The bezel (border) around the screen is quite large and gives the impression that the screen is smaller than it actually is.

Best high performance and value for money

This laptop is a beast, The screen looks fantastic and it has been able to play every game I throw at it.nnSince this didn't have an SSD and hard disk was only 5400 RPM I decided to buy a samsung pro 256 GB SSD to replace it. Installed a clean version on the SSD and formatted the hard disk that came with it.nnThe boot time is 3-4 seconds for a cold boot and almost instant for hibernate. The performance is unmatched with the SSD. nnI bought a hdd caddy and replaced the DVD Ultrabay with the old hard disk to gain 1 TB of space for movies and games.nnPros:nn1. Exceptions performance - best value for money gaming laptop in India currentlyn2. HD display - You need to experience watching a HD movie on itn3. Speakers with subwoofers - Very nice sound, full volume wakes people in the next roomn4. Ultra Bay - Customization, I already have an extra hard disk and can replace it with dvd drive whenever I want :)n5. Well built and looks sturdy - Must have for someone who travels a lot and is sometimes carelessn6. Keyboard is cool red shade - Gives a gaming laptop feeln7. Not too heavy - With SSD I decrease a few 100 grams, can lift with one hand (last laptop was 4 kg's so might be a bit biased )nnConsnn1. Average battery life - With haswell and SSD upgrade I was expecting 4 hour + but it is between 2.5 hours (intensive) to 3 hrs (light weight). Not too bad but nothing to write home aboutn2. Touchpad is worst I have seen on a laptop - If you are thinking of using a touchpad you are going to be disappointed, I use a razor so don't care but touchpad is a pain to use.n3. Cannot install clean version of Windows 8- It was a pain to do a clean install and I have been doing this from childhood, don't know how someone who is a average user will manage it. I will add the guide belown4. DVD keeps popping up when u accidentally press anywhere near that region - It is very annoying.nnOverall I am extremely happy with the product and flipkart was kind enough to deliver the product within 2 days. I have recently moved from republic of gamers so expectations were high and this laptop has delivered it.nnRegret : Bought this laptop a little earlier and didn't use the SC offer regretting it now :), could have saved around 3-4k. Flipkart if you are reading wouldn't mind price guarantee next time.nnnGuide for clean installation:n1. You need any version of the OEM Windows 8, try getting it from a friend as Lenovo charges Rs 3000 for it. Talk about double charging basically they want you to pay for a OS twice, first for the CD key which is embedded in the BIOS and second for CD itself.nnGetting it from friend/torrent and using your BIOS key is legal and actually the way to do it.nn2.If you cant get OEM windows, try getting Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. Both you will be able to clean install, but if you try to install Windows 8 Pro or retail version they would fail as it inserts the key automatically and will failnn3. When you format the old hard disk dont delete the recovery partition, its needed if you want to go back to the old OS by pressing recovery key.nn4. No recovery drive or cloning is going to allow you to do a clean install on the SSD the above 2 are your only options, I spent 2 days trying easier options each one failing.

Awesome Laptop; Misleading reviews present!!

I ordered this laptop from Flipkart. i got it delivered 2.5 days after ordering. packing was, as usual, very good. Coming to the point, this laptop is awesome in appearance as well as configuration. nnBefore buying this laptop i was in a dilema; y500 or y510p?nDifferences are: Better processor(Haswell - better than y500), Better graphics card(755m which is better than 750) and FHD screen. i was unaware about the difference HD screen made. As soon as i got this laptop in my hand, i clearly understood what HD meant. Once you go for HD, you're never going to settle for anything less. So if you have a flexible budget, go for this laptop. Y500 isnt a bad deal either.nnComing to Misleading reviews: there's a review present in Y500 thread which says GTA 4 doesn't run on high config. I ordered GTA 4 online from Flipkart along with this laptop. nI got the game a day prior to getting this laptop. As soon as i finished setting up my windows, i installed GTA 4. And guess what? it runs butter smooth even on high Config.nnI haven't got chance to install other games, but i am sure this laptop is not going to let me down in others too. nnOnly demerit: laptop gets heated up while gaming. Get a good cooling pad and the only problem gets fixed. nnGuys, do read reviews in multiple sites to get a clear picture on the product. nnThanks and keep gaming!!nn----------------------------------------------nUpdatenAssasins Creed 1 - Maxed outnAssasins Creed: Black Flag - High SettingsnMafia 2: Very High SettingsnCities XL and Euro truck Simulator are other few games which i have tried. these games have less requirement. hence, run smooth.

Impressive, premium and truly a VFM purchase.

I had been eyeing this laptop since last few months. Had been saving up and finally bought this from Flip-kart. I don't really have much to tell about the configuration of this laptop as other reviews have pretty much covered it. This is an amazing buy if you need a laptop with a back-lit keyboard and a Full High Definition display. The specs are nothing short of exemplary. As soon as you remove the packaging and take the laptop in your hands, you can feel the premium finish. Metallic exterior, eye pleasing design, very precise and clean finishing makes it adorable. Best thing about this laptop is the screen resolution. All the laptop users who have been using a traditional laptop with native resolution of 1366 x 768 will find the FHD display ecstatic. Keypad also deserves a mention. Apart from being back-lit which of course is a feast to eyes, the design and softness of the keys is commendable. Now coming to the gaming part. One of the reasons I chose to buy an expensive laptop was because I needed the gaming performance which budget laptops failed to deliver. Have only played few games till yet because of lack of time, plus a weird issue. Everyone is aware of the switchable graphics the laptop is having, but in none of the reviews did I read about issues relating to the graphic card. Few games are oblivious to Nvidia 755m. They fail to detect it and run in Intel 4600. I went through many online forums and did a thorough research. Many users are facing same issues and its not laptop specific, rather its a common issue with switchable graphics. Lenovo BIOS doesn't have an option of altering the use of dual gfx. And even when the laptop is charging, and game is configured to run in Nvidia gfx(some tweaks are needed inside Nvdia control panel) the game still is unable to detect the 755m. Now there is no static solution for the problem, as some games are running fine but few of them aren't. Many solutions are given in online forums. Installing old drivers, disabling desktop composition of the game's exe file in Win 7, making tweaks in BIOS have worked for few users. For me though, nothing worked till now. Anyways, I'll try to find out what works for me and include the solution in this review if I find it. Meanwhile, this bug shouldn't hold back anyone from purchasing this laptop. As said earlier, it's not a laptop related issue. Talking about heating issues, one can expect a generous amount of heating while gaming on a gaming laptop. I haven't used a cooler as yet so can't really tell if using a cooler makes a significant difference. But judging by other reviews I think getting a cooler is a wise decision. Y510p heats up at the left hand side while playing a graphic intensive games. The exhaust vent is pretty neatly designed. No heating at all while watching movies or Photoshop editing. My guess is whenever a graphic intensive application is ran, the graphics are switched to Nvidia 755m, which produces heat. Intel 4600 is power saving display adapter which doesn't get heated up that much. JBL Sounds are pretty impressive. You can feel the thumping beats and bass. It's a big plus point while watching movies and playing games. The DVD writer is a tad bit disappointing. Makes noise and the DVD takes it's own sweet time to open. Won't matter much because we hardly use Cd/DVDs these days. The laptop backpack is pretty impressive as well. Comes with Windows 8. I upgraded it to 8.1 which is an improvement. Though I'm not sure if I'll be sticking with it for long. I'll use it for about a month and then decide if I want to downgrade to Win 7 or not. I really hope the UltraBay devices are available in India soon. Strongly recommend an added SSD for power users. All in all a good buy. It won't disappoint you, and will be an eye catcher if you're going to show it around to your friends.
