OPPO Reno 15 Pro Mini first impressions: a compact Reno done seriously

Compact phones are back in conversation ever since the likes of OnePlus, Vivo and even Apple brought out some truly impressive devices in the second half of last year, such as the OnePlus 13s, Vivo X300, and the iPhone 17. OPPO has now entered the chat with the OPPO Reno 15 Pro Mini, the brand’s first compact phone in the Reno series. It does not position itself as a “lite” or “stripped-down” version of something bigger. Instead, OPPO seems to be pitching it as a fully loaded Reno flagship that just happens to be smaller.

At 6.32 inches, the Reno 15 Pro Mini sits in a sweet spot that many Android brands have abandoned. It is clearly more compact than today’s 6.7-inch-plus norm, yet not so small that content feels cramped or usability feels compromised. In the hand, the phone immediately feels manageable. At 187 grams and under 8mm thick, it strikes a balance between lightness and reassurance, never feeling toy-like, but also never feeling unwieldy.

The design does a lot of the heavy lifting here. OPPO’s new HoloFusion back panel is not subtle, but it is tasteful. The layered ribbon-like pattern catches light differently depending on the angle, giving the phone a sense of depth without looking flashy or gaudy. The Dynamic Stellar Ring around the camera module adds to this sense of cohesion; the camera bump feels integrated rather than slapped on. In Glacier White, which we received for review, the phone looks clean and modern, while Cocoa Brown is more understated and mature. Both finishes should resist fingerprints well and offer a confident grip.

Despite the compact footprint, durability is clearly a priority. The Reno 15 Pro Mini carries IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings. Add to that Gorilla Glass 7i and OPPO’s internal Sponge Bionic Cushioning, and this feels like a phone that can withstand the elements.

The display is another highlight on paper. The 6.32-inch AMOLED panel offers a 1.5K resolution with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and extremely slim bezels measuring just 1.6mm on the narrowest side. The result is an impressive screen-to-body ratio that makes the phone feel more immersive than its size suggests. Peak brightness numbers are high, and initial indoor use suggests punchy colours and strong contrast, though outdoor visibility and sustained brightness are things I will spend more time testing.

Cameras are clearly central to the Reno 15 Pro Mini’s identity. The headline feature is the 200MP main camera, paired with a 50MP 3.5x telephoto lens and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. On the front, OPPO has gone with a 50MP ultra-wide selfie camera, which already hints at the kind of user this phone is aimed at. Portraits, group shots, and social media-ready images seem to be a key focus, backed by OPPO’s new PureTone imaging pipeline that is tuned specifically for Indian skin tones and lighting conditions.

OPPO is also leaning heavily into computational and creative features. AI Portrait Glow, Popout collages, and Dual-View video all point towards a phone built for people who enjoy experimenting with photography and short-form video. On paper, the fact that all cameras support 4K 60fps HDR video is impressive, especially at this size. How consistent the results are across lenses is something that I will talk about in my full review.

Performance duties are handled by the MediaTek Dimensity 8450, an all-big-core chipset built on a 4nm process. OPPO claims meaningful gains in performance and efficiency, along with improved AI throughput. In everyday use so far, the phone feels fluid and responsive, with ColorOS 16 doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Animations are smooth, app switching is quick, and the overall experience feels polished rather than aggressive.

ColorOS 16 itself feels like a refinement rather than a reinvention. Features like Flux Home Screen, Aqua Dynamics, and deeper Google Gemini integration add convenience without overwhelming the user. AI Mind Space, call summaries, live translation, and smart transcription are clearly designed for people who want their phone to do more contextual work for them, though how useful these features are day-to-day will depend on how consistently they work.

Battery life is another area where the Reno 15 Pro Mini appears to challenge expectations. A 6,200mAh battery in a phone this size is notable, and OPPO’s 80W fast charging promises quick top-ups. OPPO claims a full charge in under an hour, and short bursts of charging are said to deliver hours of usage. Real-world endurance and thermal behaviour during charging are areas I will be watching closely during extended use.

What stands out most in these early days is intent. The Reno 15 Pro Mini does not feel like a compromise-driven product. OPPO has taken the idea of a compact phone and treated it seriously, backing it with flagship-grade cameras, strong durability, a large battery, and a modern software experience.

Whether all of this translates into a consistently great everyday experience is something only time will tell. But as first impressions go, the Reno 15 Pro Mini makes a strong case for itself as one of the most interesting compact Android phones OPPO has released in years. But at a starting price of Rs 59,999, the Reno 15 Pro Mini will face stiff competition from rival compact phones, including the Vivo X200 FE and the OnePlus 13s, both of which impressed us last year.
