MediaTek and Samsung achieve up to 670 Mbps in new 5G uplink test

Highlights

Samsung and MediaTek are pushing 5G upload speeds further, with a new lab test that combines more antennas, layers and spectrum than current commercial networks. The companies say the trial could lay the groundwork for faster, more reliable uploads in future devices and fixed wireless access services.

How was it done?

MediaTek and Samsung have completed what they claim is the industry’s first test of a 3Tx 5‑layer uplink configuration on 5G networks. The joint trial used MediaTek’s M90 5G modem platform alongside Samsung’s virtualised RAN, massive MIMO and macro radios to push uplink speeds to around 670 Mbps across combined n66 and n77 spectrum.

By stacking three transmit antennas and five uplink layers over multiple bands, the setup aims to improve how quickly devices can send data back to the network, rather than just download it. MediaTek says the approach should strengthen fixed wireless access services and support more demanding cloud and immersive applications, while Samsung positions it as another step towards higher, more consistent 5G upload performance for future devices and services.

“This successful validation with Samsung represents a transformative milestone for the MediaTek 5G platform,” said Dr HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems & Partnerships at MediaTek. “As the needs for ultra‑high‑resolution cloud applications continue to surge, this technology will be a key driver for next‑generation industry innovation.”

“By achieving another industry‑first milestone in collaboration with MediaTek, Samsung continues to set the pace for enhanced uplink performance through advanced configurations,” said Dongwoo Lee, Head of Technology Solution Group, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “This joint test demonstrates exceptional speeds that translate into unparalleled user experiences and reliable, constant connectivity. These gains have the potential to revolutionise industries and consumer usage alike.”
