Nothing Ear (3) launches with adaptive noise cancellation, metal case with built-in mic, and more
Nothing has officially unveiled the Ear (3), the fourth-generation model in its flagship True Wireless Stereo (TWS) lineup. Building on the success of its predecessors, the Ear (3) introduces a mix of design innovation, upgraded acoustics, and a unique case-integrated Super Mic that pushes the brand’s personal audio vision forward. The name might suggest this is the third TWS, but it’s actually the fourth. Nothing debuted its first TWS, the Ear (1), in 2021, followed by the Ear (2) in 2023, the Ear in 2024, and now the Ear (3). Now that the confusing naming scheme has been clarified, let’s move on to what’s new with the Nothing Ear (3).
Super Mic in the case
The standout feature of the Nothing Ear (3) is Super Mic, a dual-microphone array built directly into the charging case. Using ambient-filtering tech, it can cut through up to 95 dB of surrounding noise, ensuring clear conversations even in crowded spaces. Users can activate it via the TALK button on the case, which seems ideal for quick chats or longer calls without needing to wear the buds.
The case also doubles up as a voice recorder: pressing the TALK button allows you to capture notes or “Essential Space” ideas, which are then automatically synced and transcribed on your Nothing smartphone.
Each earbud complements this setup with a triple-mic array and bone-conduction Voice Pick-up Unit (VPU), which allows your voice to come through even in noisy or windy environments.
Adaptive noise cancellation and upgraded sound
Nothing Ear (3) supports real-time adaptive ANC up to 45 dB, which the brand says can recalibrate every 600 milliseconds to block environmental noise. It also adjusts fit-related leakage. Nothing Ear (3) also features AI-driven environmental noise cancellation, trained on over 20 million hours of audio, that further sharpens voice clarity.
On the audio front, the buds are powered by a 12mm dynamic driver with a new patterned diaphragm, offering a 20 percent larger radiating area than before. This results in punchier bass (4–6 dB increase) and cleaner treble (up to 4 dB boost), creating a more spacious and balanced soundstage.
Transparent design with a metallic case
Nothing continues its design-first approach, and the Ear (3) stays true to its transparent aesthetic, now complemented by metal accents. A new Metal-Insulator-Metal antenna improves wireless performance with a 15 percent gain in radiated power and 20 percent better sensitivity.
The charging case is a highlight on its own as it’s built from 100 percent recycled aluminium. The fusion of metal and plastic is done without glue, giving it a premium and sustainable body.
Performance and battery life
With a 55mAh battery in each earbud, Nothing says users can expect up to 10 hours of continuous playback (90 minutes more than the previous model), and up to 38 hours with the case. A quick 10-minute USB-C charge delivers 10 hours of playback. The Ear (3) case also comes with wireless charging support.
The Ear (3) is equipped with Bluetooth 5.4 and LDAC support for high-resolution streaming, and a dedicated low-latency mode (under 120ms) for gaming. You can pair the Ear (3) with Android (Google Fast Pair), iOS, and Windows (Swift Pair) devices. Then there’s the Nothing X app, which lets users fine-tune controls, ANC levels, and even access ChatGPT integration directly from the buds.
Durability-wise, both the buds and case come with an IP54 rating for dust, sweat, and splash resistance.
With the Ear (3), Nothing is positioning itself in the upper mid-premium TWS segment, competing directly with Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. The Ear (3) provides a complete package for different types of listeners with LDAC support, real-time adaptive ANC, and low-latency mode. The new and unique case also gives it an edge over other premium TWS in the market. It will be interesting to see how the Ear (3) has improved upon its predecessors and how it compares to its rivals.
The Nothing Ear (3) will be available globally in black and white at £179 / $179 / €179. While its India launch has been confirmed, pricing and availability details haven’t been revealed yet. For other markets, pre-order is already live, and open sale begins on September 25th.
