Nothing Phone (3a) Lite teased with familiar design; India launch uncertain

After catering to the midrange smartphone segment with the Nothing Phone (3a) and its sub-brand’s CMF Phone 2 Pro, Nothing is adding one more smartphone to its portfolio on October 29th. Dubbed Nothing Phone (3a) Lite, it could be a stripped-down version of the Phone (3a), as the name suggests. If released, a product with the “Lite” moniker will be a first for the company across its smartphones and audio devices lineup, suggesting an affordable alternative positioning to its “a” branded products, such as the Phone (2a) and (3a), CMF Buds 2a, and so on. Nothing has also teased a small portion of the phone’s design.

Nothing Phone (3a) Lite may take heavy design cues from its elder siblings

An official teaser released by Nothing on X and Instagram appears to show the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite’s rear bottom portion. This rear panel features the same design language as the Nothing Phone (3a), i.e. a transparent top layer with multiple design elements and a nail being exposed. The key highlight of the teaser is the small white LED positioned just above the corner, while maintaining consistency with the (3a) lineup.

While this LED is constantly blinking in the teaser video, we aren’t sure whether the phone will sport the Glyph LED structure like the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro around the camera module, especially since the flagship Phone (3) ditched it in favour of Glyph Matrix. As for the LED light’s function, it’s safe to assume it could act as an upcoming call or notification indicator, while having other features.

Nothing Phone (3a) Lite could feature similar performance to Nothing’s previous releases

The Nothing Phone (3a) Lite recently surfaced on Geekbench with the model number A001T, as spotted by Anvin (@ZionsAnvin) on X. The Geekbench listing reveals that the phone will be powered by the octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, the standard variant of Dimensity 7300 Pro found on the CMF Phone 2 Pro.

The listing further reveals the handset will feature 8GB RAM and run on Android 15, which we assume is backed by Nothing OS 3.5. In another tweet by Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), the Phone (3a) Lite appears to have scored 1,003 points and 2,925 points in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. These scores are on par with the results delivered by the CMF Phone 2 Pro in our-house Geekbench tests, i.e. 1,007 (single-core) and 2,872 (multi-core) points.

Furthermore, it would be worth seeing whether the Phone (3a) Lite will feature a telephoto lens or not, since every phone released by Nothing packs this particular lens, including the budget CMF Phone 2 Pro. A telephoto lens aids in capturing clearer long-distance shots and allows for appealing human portrait shots. Coming back to performance, several sub-Rs 20,000 smartphones get the Dimensity 7400 chipset, such as the iQOO Z10R and Motorola G86 Power, which have slightly better raw performance than the Dimensity 7300 per our tests.

The Nothing Phone (3a) with Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, on the other hand, achieved 1,179 and 3,311 in single-core and multi-core Geekbench tests, respectively. These scores aren’t far off from Phone (3a) Lite’s leaked scores, but the gap is enough to position the handset a tier below.

India launch for Nothing Phone (3a) Lite is uncertain at the moment

Although Nothing has officially confirmed the release date of the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite on its social media handles through a teaser, no such reveals have been made by Nothing India on any of its social profiles as of the writing of this story. This strongly ties in with the report released by the French publication, Dealabs, which noted that the handset could go on sale in Europe on November 4th, and may start at EUR 249.99 (Rs 25,600 approx.).

With no announcement from Nothing India regarding the Phone (3a) Lite’s launch, it’s possible the handset may land in India at a later date or not at all, since the sub-Rs 20,000 and sub-Rs 25,000 segments are being taken care of by the CMF Phone 2 Pro and Nothing Phone (3a), respectively. The name strongly suggests that the phone could sit between the CMF Phone 2 Pro and Phone (3a) in terms of pricing. Also, since it’s a “Lite” version, the performance and camera hardware may not be on par with the Phone (3a)/(3a) Pro.

Whatever the case may be, the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite could be an attempt from the company to capture a wider audience and offer similar experiences as its more expensive devices, such as Nothing OS, the signature semi-transparent design, and fun utilities through the addition of LED lights on the rear. Such aspects may set the Phone (3a) Lite apart from others and could stand as a unique choice among potential buyers looking for a distinctly designed phone and software.

Also, the company recently confirmed that it would start adding third-party apps and services to its select non-flagship smartphones for sustained operations and growth. As a result, the Phone (3a) Lite could be among the first phones from Nothing to come pre-installed with third-party apps, which has never happened before.
