OnePlus 15 launching tomorrow at 7PM. Here are 4 things it is bringing to the flagship segment for the first time

With the flagship launch season upon us, brands are hard at work to bring their next generation of premium smartphones to India. Among those brands is OnePlus, which is all set to release the OnePlus 15 – India’s first smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset on November 13th at 7 PM (watch on YouTube) with the sale starting an hour later at 8 PM. As the launch draws near, OnePlus has officially unveiled several features and aspects that will debut on the OnePlus 15 for the first time. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

First flagship with a 7,300mAh battery in India

A few days ago, OnePlus confirmed on its social media handles that the OnePlus 15 will boast a whopping 7,300 mAh battery. While this capacity is not only 1,300mAh larger than OnePlus’ outgoing flagship, the OnePlus 13 (6,000mAh), but also surpasses other upcoming high-end devices for which details have been made available officially.

For instance, both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered Realme GT 8 Pro and iQOO 15, which are slated to launch at a later date, will rock a 7,000mAh battery. Although these phones offer impressive battery capacity in their own right, they still fall slightly short of the OnePlus 15’s massive 7,300mAh cell. The OnePlus 13 deployed a dual-cell silicon carbon-based battery to fit more lithium ions in the same footprint as a traditional battery. This enabled OnePlus to keep the phone’s thickness and weight slim and balanced, possibly doing an even better job at managing ergonomics than its predecessor. The OnePlus 15 could likely boast the same battery technology while pushing the capacity even further. The smartphone is also confirmed to feature 120W SUPERVOOC wired charging.

First Android device in India with 4K 120fps Dolby Vision for recording and playback

Last year, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro (and Pro Max) was the first smartphone to feature 4K 120fps Dolby Vision recording. However, on the Android camp, the OnePlus 15 will be the first Android smartphone in India to come with the said video recording combination. What this implies is that the OnePlus 15 will be capable of capturing videos with superior details and clarity, rich colours, and high dynamic range (HDR). With 120FPS support, when watching the videos on a 4K-supported display, such as a TV or monitor, the playback should be smooth without motion blur artefacts.

The end result is that, when playing 4K 120FPS Dolby Vision videos on the OnePlus 15, it can utilise the display’s maximum brightness potential to deliver vivid colours and great contrast levels in HDR format. Even though the display of the OnePlus 15 doesn’t support 4K playback, the experience of watching content shot in Dolby Vision should be emaculate and immersive.

First smartphone offering personalised AI with real-time internet access

OnePlus debuted the Plus Mind, an AI content curator that can analyse saved information such as texts, images, and offer summaries which can be referred to later, this year on the OnePlus 13s. For the OnePlus 15, which will be the first device to run on OxygenOS 16 out of the box, OnePlus has partnered with Google to integrate Mind Space with Gemini for users to seek personalised outputs and ask custom prompts based on the information saved in Mind Space. This feature will also arrive on previous models with the OxygenOS 16 update.

This also happens to be the first time a personalised AI system, in this case Mind Space, will be able to offer real-time results by pulling relevant information from the internet. For instance, if you’ve previously saved photos or screenshots of apparel in Mind Space, asking Gemini to show similar outfits will utilise the saved data and leverage Gemini’s deep LLM architecture if one asks it to make an outfit plan for a trip to a certain location. While Gemini has been previously integrated in system-level apps, such as on Samsung devices, OnePlus has gone a step further to allow Gemini to utilise the saved data and offer clear-cut and relevant results.

Industry’s most complete IP ratings

The brand recently claimed that the OnePlus 15 will have the “industry’s most complete IP ratings”. What they mean by this statement is that the handset will not only have IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings, just like many premium and even midrange smartphones released this year, but will also be equipped with an IP69K rating. This rating ensures the device is fully sealed against dust and can handle hot, high-pressure water blasts from any direction.

How does this translate in real life? Suppose that in any unexpected circumstance, the OnePlus 15 falls into a sink full of hot water or is hit by a high-pressure water jet, such as the one used for watering plants, the phone will survive it all unscathed. On the other hand, the IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings provide protection against dust particles, water splashes, and even immersion to a maximum depth of around 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes.

While OnePlus is releasing its next-gen flagship phone a couple of months early this time, the brand has ensured the OnePlus 15 comes with never-before-seen features on the Android side. What’s more is that the features on offer for the first time may actually translate to real-world implications, such as a massive 7,300mAh battery for higher endurance, stringent protection against dust and water, Dolby Vision at 4K 120fps, and curating plans or an itinerary through Gemini using your own data.

The only thing left is the pricing! We’ll have to find that out tomorrow during the OnePlus 15 launch event, which begins at 7 PM IST. The phone will go on sale immediately after the launch event at 8 PM, allowing buyers to purchase it right away, skipping the traditional gap between the launch and sale dates.
