At the start of this movie, Victor Arthur "Vic" Brown (Sir Alan Bates) and some of his friends are seen perusing a magazine filled with shots of topless models. This is one of the first instances in British cinema showing bared breasts.
To avoid any possible U.K. censorship issues due to the subject matter, the filmmakers invited BBFC Chief John Trevelyan to visit the set during filming. The finished product was then passed uncut.
This movie only really found an audience at home in the U.K. after it landed the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
Albert Finney turned down the role of Victor Arthur "Vic" Brown.
This movie cost one hundred sixty-five thousand pounds sterling, and grossed nearly three times that much just in the U.K.
"Mrs. Rothwell: How dare you do this to my daughter! Vic: I did good for your daughter! I married her! Mrs. Rothwell: Yes! After you seduced her! Vic: It would have been me or someone else, sooner or later."
"Vic: You know, it's a funny feeling. Sometimes I really fancy her, and the next day I can hardly stand the sight of her."
