The house used as Ruth & Seretse's home in the film was the home of the real Ruth & Seretse.

The Botswanan people were invited to be extras in the film. On the first day of filming, 3000 people turned up.

Actress Jessica Oyelowo (Lady Lily Canning) is the real life wife of David Oyelowo (who plays the lead role of Seretse Khama).

A book on this event entitled A Marriage of Inconvenience (1990) was written by Michael Dutfield and subtitled "The Persecution of Seretse and Ruth Khama". The book was made into a TV film of the same title in 1990.

Bits and pieces of this story is told in Alexander McCall Smith's best selling The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (2008) series.
