Amsterdam Review

Amsterdam is a multi-starrer based on the Business Plot, a massive political conspiracy from back in the day. However, despite the star-studded cast and the heavy plot, the movie hasn't been able to hit home. David O Russell's latest and most ambitious directorial is just filled with so many complicated sequences and plot twists that the movie is just unbearable to watch overall. In fact, what makes things even worse is the overtly optimistic climax, which is too cringe to bear by the end of things. The production team has essentially wasted a rather substantial budget on storytelling that does not land. That said, it has its bright moments. Obviously, there is the ever-charming Christian Bale shining throughout, despite his shallow character development. And, the movie sure is entertaining in parts, which makes for one-time viewing if you are a big Hollywood movie buff. In an attempt to go to the Oscars, Amsterdam failed even at the box office.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Christian Bale stopped talking to Chris Rock on set. He claimed that he was very funny, which made it hard for him to act.

Was a box office failure, losing the studio an estimated $97 million, according to Deadline.

Michael B. Jordan originally was cast as the project geared up for an April 2020 shoot. But when filming was delayed nearly an entire year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jordan became unavailable due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by John David Washington.

Of working with Anya Taylor-Joy on this film, David O. Russell said, "Anya is fearless and intuitively vulnerable and confident in a manner that is uniquely her own. She is different and strange in ways that are fascinating both toward darkness and toward light."

Christian Bale's performance was heavily modeled on the famed Peter Falk character Columbo.

"Burt Berendsen: [Putting pain-killing drops in his eye] My back is killing me. Usually guys like me turn to booze, or drugs, which leads to addiction [the eye drops take effect] Burt Berendsen: WOW! That's fast."
