One of Clint Eastwood's most successful movies. So was its predecessor, Every Which Way but Loose (1978). Both, when adjusted for inflation into constant dollars, are still big box-office titles, this movie being ranked in the Top 200 grossing movies of all-time.
Per Sondra Locke's autobiography, Clint Eastwood took megadoses of vitamins and ate boiled potatoes like popcorn to bulk up for his role as a street boxer.
A replacement had to be found for Manis the Orangutan, the original Clyde, as he had grown too much in the two years since the first movie.
The movie later on had a major re-release on a double-bill with its predecessor Every Which Way but Loose (1978).
The final fight scene around the town square in Jackson Hole took two days to film, closing the streets during the busy June tourist season. Merchants around the square were not happy, and many were compensated mainly for their signage showing up on film and others because of complaints they were losing customers. The fight scenes used up to 300 locals for background extras. Some well-known locals with quick cameos included Gerry Spence, a nationally known trial lawyer, and Jackson Hole morning D.J. Skip Mahoney. It was reported that tourism to Jackson Hole went up 30% after this movie was released the following summer.
"Cholla, Black Widow Leader: Why me Lord? You made other men out of clay. Mine, you made out of shit."
"Wyoming Trooper: Son, you are a walking violation of the laws of nature, but we don't enforce them laws."
