TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

In one scene the dog starts mimicking Jack Nicholson by stepping over the cracks in the sidewalk. The filmmakers accomplished this by placing little obstacles on the cracks so that the dog had to step over them. They then removed the obstacles digitally in post-production.

Jack Nicholson said that playing Melvin was difficult, but he was "the most lovable character I've ever played."

At the 1998 Oscar ceremony, when his name was announced as the winner of the Best Actor award, Jack Nicholson ascended to the podium by carefully stepping over the cracks between the tiles on the stage, in imitation of his character, Melvin Udall. Nicholson dedicated his Oscar to his A Few Good Men (1992) co-star J.T. Walsh who had died shortly before the Academy Awards in 1998.

The real "Verdell" stayed at Jack Nicholson's Hollywood house during the movie.

In the scene where Carol reads out a letter of apology and thanks to Melvin, Helen Hunt did one take where she read out an eighteen-page letter in its entirety.

Popular Dialogues

"Melvin Udall: Now, I got a real great compliment for you, and it's true. Carol Connelly: I'm so afraid you're about to say something awful. Melvin Udall: Don't be pessimistic, it's not your style. Okay. Here I go. Clearly a mistake. [shifts in his seat uncomfortably] Melvin Udall: I've got this, what, ailment? My doctor, a shrink that I used to go to all the time, he says that in fifty or sixty percent of the cases, a pill really helps. I hate pills. Very dangerous thing, pills. Hate. I'm using the word "hate" here, about pills. Hate. My compliment is, that night when you came over and told me that you would never... all right, well, you were there, you know what you said. Well, my compliment to you is, the next morning, I started taking the pills. Carol Connelly: I don't quite get how that's a compliment for me. Melvin Udall: You make me want to be a better man. [pause] Carol Connelly: [stunned] That's maybe the best compliment of my life. Melvin Udall: Well, maybe I overshot a little, because I was aiming at just enough to keep you from walking out."

"Melvin Udall: [introducing Carol to Simon] Carol the waitress, Simon the fag."
