Mark Wahlberg was originally offered the role of Jake Roenick but turned it down.
In the original movie, Bishop was the police officer and the Caucasian actor was the criminal.
In the opening scene, SGT Roenick (Ethan Hawke) goes by the name "Napoleon". This is the first name of the main criminal, Napoleon Wilson (Darwin Johnson) in the original Assault on Precinct 13 (1976).
This is an updated remake of Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) which was itself a remake of Rio Bravo (1959). Incidentally the soundtrack features several songs sung by Dean Martin who co-starred in (and sang the theme tune to) Rio Bravo.
Sergeant Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy) makes reference to the movie "First Blood". Dennehy had a starring role in that movie as Will Teasle, the sheriff who pursues John Rambo.
"Rosen: Your eyes are red. You been smokin' crack? Beck: Your eyes are glazed. You been eatin' donuts?"
"Jake Roenick: Don't miss, Bishop. Marion Bishop: Run fast, Sergeant."
