IMDbWhen filming began on this movie in late summer of 1965, Tommy Kirk was on probation with Walt Disney Studios due to an arrest on a marijuana possession charge from Christmas Eve of 1964. Although later cleared by the District Attorney's office, he was immediately replaced after the arrest by Michael Anderson Jr. for the role of the youngest son in the John Wayne movie, The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), for which principal shooting was to begin January 4, 1965. Newspapers of March 20, 1965, reported that Kirk had signed a five-year contract with American-International Pictures and on June 3, although details were not given, newspapers reports about Kirk stated that "His recent bout with the police in a mid-west city didn't do his clean cut kid image any good and his career with the Disney films seems over."
The Cascades perform an early song written by Ray Davies, of The Kinks.
Tommy Kirk was signed to a four-picture contract with Executive Pictures Corporation. He didn't make any films after this one.
When the movie was filmed in August to September 1965, the Cascades, the featured band, were three years past their only hit, "Rhythm of the Rain." By the film's release, original members were leaving the group.
The mimicry of AIP's Beach Party movies extends to a faux Buster Keaton character, played by Robert Donner, who barely interacts with the other characters and whose primarily function seems to be repeatedly falling into the water and muttering, "I don't believe it."
"Charlie Moss: You shoulda seen him comin' up the coast. I don't think the sell bikinis in Arizona. Don: Oh, they sell 'em. But, I've never seen so many trying to cover so much with so little success."
"Don: About yesterday, I'm sorry I slapped you - and I wasn't really drowning either. Don: I forgot all about that. Tina Moss: Really? Don: Really. But, you do pack a pretty mean wallop. Tina Moss: Don't rub it in. Don: I was gonna say for a pretty girl."
