In the premiere, Liv picks up a gold helmet. John warns her "put that down, before it puts you down." The helmet resembles the Helm of Nabu, the regular headgear of Doctor Fate, a fellow DC comics character who is a wizard himself, and John's warning is a reference to the lore of the Nabu persona being tied to the helmet, taking control of whosoever puts it on.
An online petition has begun, to convince other networks to pick up the show for a second season. The petition, aimed at networks such as USA, The CW Network, and El Rey, has reached upwards of 50,000 signatures.
After the writers purportedly "opted to move in a different direction", Lucy Griffiths was fired from the series and replaced by Angélica Celaya as Zed, better known from the "Hellblazer" comic.
