Lagaan tells the tale of the Indian village Champaner, beset by drought and British colonialism in the year 1893. Without a drop of rain in months, the worried villagers of Champaner decide to ask the local authorities for a temporary repeal of their taxes -- the hated lagaan. Led by the heroic Bhuvan (Indian superstar Aamir Khan) they bring their plight to the military governor, Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne). But the sadistic Russell threatens to raise the lagaan threefold, unless the villagers can beat his men at a game of cricket, in which case he'll lift taxes on the entire province for a period of three years. Bhuvan accepts the challenge, but there's a problem -- no one in Champaner knows how to play cricket. A band of misfits come to the rescue, coached by Russell's soft-hearted sister Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), and the race is on to be ready in three months' time. An epic reworking of Victory with eye-popping song-and-dance routines.

The first cut of the film was 7 hours and 30 minutes long.
Aamir Khan wore his wife's earrings for the role of Bhuvan.
The movie was shot in villages of Bhuj (Gujarat). Bhuj was destroyed in an earthquake on 26th January 2001, six months after the movie was shot.
The movie had the biggest number of British actors ever to be cast in a single movie in the history of Indian Cinema.
The first Bollywood production in 30 years to use synchronized sound. An Arri535 camera, brought over from Germany, was used to facilitate sync-sound recording. Most Indian films are dubbed entirely in the studio in the process known as ADR.
"[Gauri is walking away in tears, Bhuvan shouts after her] Bhuvan: Hey Gauri! There's only one house in the village with a neem tree in the yard. There's also a big field beside it. There's some chickens, two cows, and three goats. And I know whose house that is! It's mine, you silly girl! One thing before you go. Mother likes you, too!"
"Gauri: You think I don't see which way the Ganges is flowing? Bhuvan: Oh, pity me, I feel the pain of the scorpion's sting. You're jealous! Gauri: [gasps] Why should I be jealous? Jealousy is beneath me. Bhuvan: You're jealous, and I know who you're jealous of. Gauri: I never want to see you again, and don't even try and talk to me."
