Dhanush was initially offered the role of Karthik in Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa (2010). ENPT marks his first collaboration with director Gautham Menon.
Singer Karthik was initially roped in for the "Maruvaarthai" song and had even sung it. However, director Gautham Menon was not pleased with this version as he felt that Karthik's vocals did not fit the song. Gautham then had Sid Sriram sing the song, which subsequently made the final version.
The film was initially meant to scheduled to release for Valentine's Day in 2016. Due to production and film delays, it got delayed by 3 1/2 years and finally released in late 2019.
