One of three films in which Charlie Sheen was billed under the name Charles. This was in keeping to his turning a new leaf in his personal life after his battles with alcohol and drug addiction along with the infamous Heidi Fleiss scandal. He would later return to his more familiar name after replacing Michael J. Fox on the hit series, Spin City (1996) in 2000.
Charlie Sheen's father, Martin Sheen, has a brief cameo near the end of the film. This film is also a reunion for Martin Sheen and his Apocalypse Now (1979) co-star Marlon Brando.
There was a long casting process to find actresses to play the twins. The roles eventually went to Quebec natives Christin and Holly Watson, who have not had any acting roles before or since 1997 when the movie was filmed.
Prior to this film, Charlie Sheen and Donald Sutherland co-starred in Shadow Conspiracy (1997), which came out a year prior and was on the shelf for a year. Free Money also suffered the same fate before it finally released on video in 1999.
In a 2008 interview, actor Thomas Haden Church reflected, "At the exact same time I was offered the lead in Free Money with Charlie Sheen and Marlon Brando, I was offered a role in Saving Private Ryan. And I chose to march off to Canada to work with Marlon Brando. I had a manager at the time-we were soon parted-but he was like, "You're gonna go do a movie with Marlon Brando that more than likely no one will see, vs. a really nice role in a movie that's probably going to win Best Picture next year?" And he was right! But the experience working with Marlon in his penultimate performance was irreplaceable. And I spent 10, 12 weeks with him in Quebec, and it was a remarkable experience, and I wouldn't trade it for any credit on my résumé."
