The film and the source novel are both works of fiction, and the impact of the death of his son on Shakespeare's later works - including Hamlet - remains the subject of much academic discussion. However, the film is largely faithful to known events in Shakespeare's life: the 18-year-old Shakespeare married 26-year-old Anne (or Agnes) Hathaway in 1582; it was a "shotgun wedding" as the couple's first child was born six months later; Hamnet was born in 1585 and died in 1596; the original Globe Theatre opened in 1599; and the play Hamlet was written at some point between 1599 and 1601.
The scene where Will asks Hamnet if he will be brave was partially improvised. In Jacobi Jupe's final callback for the role, Paul Mescal informed Chloé Zhao that he was going to purposely mess with the scene to test Jupe. As Mescal said his line, he threw Jupe over his shoulder, and Jupe responded in character. Zhao wrote the rough-housing into the final script.
The scene at the end when Agnes (Jessie Buckley) reaches out and touches the actor playing Hamlet on stage was not in the script or rehearsed. Buckley was asked to improvise as she saw fit by the director and the extras surrounding her all joined in with the spontaneity of the moment.
If you look closely the "Hamlet" leaflet that Susanna hands to Agnes contains the names real-life surnames of the actors portraying the company performers in the play. "Mr. Jupe" , "Mr. Shalloo", "Mr. Gibson" are Noah Jupe, Jack Shalloo, and Hera Gibson respectively.
At Chloé Zhao's request, Paul Mescal got genuinely drunk for the scene in which Shakespeare is drunk. Mescal said it was a fun experiment, but admitted he was hungover the next day.
