  • Story:

Movies set in the backdrop of a college campus have a certain mass appeal to them because of the relatability they bring to the table. The Hostel is a movie about a girl trapped in a boys' hostel that leads to a hilarious turn of events. This movie is a remake of a popular Malayalam film Adi Kapyare Kootamani. Besides, movies set in the tone of a boys’ hostel have an instant humorous appeal because the audience expects a lot of fun, pranks, laughter, and funny stories.

The entire movie is filled with situational comedy to invoke laughter. For example, the ghost’s backstory in the movie strikes as a horror-comedy because a girl ends her life because she faced countless rejections on account of her dark complexion.

The redundant double entendres on sex and masturbation bring out the nostalgia of hostel life. The object of the movie is to tell the audience what happens when a girl gets trapped in a boys’ hostel with a strict warden.

    Why should you watch Hostel?
The Hostel is the Tamil remake of the popular Malayalam movie Adi Kapyare Kootamani which successfully portrayed the comedy of errors. The Hostel movie is full of funny characters that are confused and frustrated in their college life, which leads to several funny situations in the movie. The movie starts with the introduction of the hostel warden Father Kuriakose who instantly makes it clear that he is all about discipline.

The backdrop of characters that are introduced further is that they are either alcoholic or sex-deprived. The protagonist of the film Kathir (played by Ashok Selvan) is presented as a guy who can’t move his gaze off a woman who is exercising in the park. The plot progresses with the introduction of the female lead Adhirshtalakshmi (played by Priya Bhavani Shankar), who spots Kathir and realizes that he is in a bit of financial trouble and offers to help. However, in return, she wants Kathir to take her to the boys’ hostel, where he stays.

Obviously, this strikes as a fair deal to Kathir, and he agrees. The plot picks up the pace from here as Adhirshtalakshmi gets trapped in the boys’ hostel on account of a strict warden. She now has to deal with a bunch of hostelites who are co-dwelling with her. The entire adventure is spun in a light comedy with the rightly placed comedy of errors. Watch the movie to uncover why Adhirshtalakshmi was so keen to enter the hostel and what was so peculiar about the place.

The arc in the plot where everyone talks about the ghost of a girl who had committed suicide adds the horror-comedy element to the movie. The story of the ghost is bound to tickle the audience. The background score in this arc is the perfect blend of horror background tone and the humor element.

    Trivia Alert

    • The male lead of the movie Ashok Selvan is known to experiment with his roles.
