According to director Andy Muschietti, Bill Skarsgård was "hesitant" to return as Pennywise because "he had played a lot of very dark characters... it takes a toll to live in the head of those characters for a long time." However, Skarsgård finally agreed because he was interested in exploring Pennywise's backstory as Bob Gray.
The show will have a total of three seasons. Each season will take place in a different time period within Derry.
Original "It" (1986) author Stephen King said the following when the series was announced: "I'm excited that the story of Derry, Maine's most haunted city, is continuing, and I'm glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!".
In March 2022, HBO and Warner Bros. announced the show as a prequel series to the IT movie franchise. The prequel was titled "Welcome to Derry" (later re-titled to "IT: Welcome to Derry"). The director of the two earlier films, Andy Muschietti, was announced to work as an executive director on the series with his sister, Barbara Muschietti.
Bill Skarsgård, who portrays Pennywise/It in It (2017), It: Chapter Two (2019), and this show, became one one of the show's executive producers after his return to the role.
